Firstly let me state that I am a Christian. I am not an avid Christian but am one nontheless. I have taken part in a discussion like this before and find it an interesting question. Jesus Christ has influenced billions of people throughout the last 2000 or so years and will continue to do so for thousands of years to come. In essence has he established a cult following so therefore could be deemed as the first mass cult leader?

The historical evidence of Jesus is still unclear. But if he was a mass cult leader, it looks like he didn't plan it. It's only much later that religious people made him a leader and started writing the 'legend'.

Historically, there may have been several 'Jesuses' that were made one and became a legend. A bit like Robin Hood or William Tell, if you will. Whoever he was, Jesus certainly hadn't planned to become such a prominent religious figure and it's our civilisation that made him such.
Who knows? Maybe 2,000 years from now people will worship Elvis and make pilgrimages to Graceland. ;)
