What is the best way to quit smoking?

Ok after this tax increase I am quitting the habit. I have smoked for the past 5 1/2 years straight. I started smoking about 12 years ago, but quit for a year with my three pregnancies. I had my last baby 5 years ago and have smoked since. I am thinking about going to get the Nicoderm CQ Patch. Can anyone tell me what the best way is to quit?

You have to really want to quit for yourself. You have to plan it and know that there will be tough times and you need to know how you are going to handle those tough times. I planned my quit date over a month in advance. I planned to quit, cold turkey after my 30th birthday. After about 48hrs,the nicotine cravings are gone and all you are left with, is a habit you have to change. And you have to have a lot of will power to change the habit. The more you think about it, the more you will want one.....keep busy! One of my triggers was my car. Every time I was in my car on my own, i would light up. This was actually a hard one to change and still is at times, but it's getting easier. I keep gum in my car all the time and when I have the urge, I reach for the gum. Work out your 'triggers' so you can deal with them when you quit. I still have days when I would love one, but I'm stubborn and I don't give in.

Congratulations! Keep up the good work. I too am saving the money I'm not spending on smokes. It's a real eye-opener as to how much you actually spend. Both my partner and I gave up at the same time, so you can probably imagine the money we are saving. We are going on a holiday later this year with the money we've saved. Good luck!

It isn't going as bad as I thought it would. My hardest times are when I first wake up and when I am driving. I have to keep my mind off of smoking at these times. Today is day 4 of no smoking. Best of luck when you give it up.

Occupy yourself with something else. Try to find some work always. Chewing gums do the trick sometimes, but not always. Above all, what you need is the mental strenth to take a decision and showing faith to that. Good luck.

Today is day 4 of no smoking. The first 2 days were the hardest. My quit day was Saturday the 6th. That day I cleaned my house from top to bottom and went through cabinets and got rid of tons of stuff on freecycle. It kept me occupied and was able to make it through the day. I am doing the patch right now so that I can get rid of the urge for the actual habit of doing something with my hands. Once that is conquered I will get rid of the patch. I have gum stashed in all my smoking areas and when I visit if I want a smoke I grab a piece of gum. I also have been using cheerios to help with that hand motion. Thanks!
