I was an exchange student to Kenya, East Africa, in 1977.

Mombasa - Mombasa, on the Indian Ocean coast, is the second largest city in Kenya, East Africa. These giant tusk arches are the landmark entrance to the city.

Have you ever been an exchange student? In the summer of 1977 I was an exchange student to the country of Kenya in East Africa. In that year it was the silver anniversary of Queen Elizabeth. Kenya was independent but in the past it has been a colony of England. I lived in the city of Mombasa, on the east coast of the country. I lived on the island part of Mombasa and our house was 5 minutes walk from the beach. I attended a school in Mombasa where the students who were my own age (16,17) had a more advanced education than I did from my home school in the United States. I stayed for 10 weeks and even had a chance to date a wonderful young man. We cried together the morning I left Mombasa. Kenya is rich with mixed European, African and Asian culture. Many languages including numerous African tribal languages are spoken. The main languages are English and Swahili. Have you ever had an experience as an exchange student? There are schools that sponsor domestic exchanges that sometimes last just a few days or a few weeks. There are some programs that sponsor year long student exchanges and some programs that are only for the summer or a few months. Recently, my sons were privileged to make friends with a young lady visiting their school from Germany. She stayed here for about six months in this country. She also attended the same church and youth group as my boys do. In a few days she is going home to Germany. Listening to her the other day I heard the echoes of myself and my friends from almost 30 years ago... I've had such a good time here, and made so many friends, I don't want to go home...I just want to stay here!

I have met kids from Russia, Israel, Switzerland and Africa, through these programs/school, but I have never been an exchange student or hosted one, I don't think I would have been brave enough to go anywhere alone like that.

It is a wonderful way to increase your self confidence. You would never really be alone because you travel with a group and you live with a family. It is not something to be afraid of, but an adventure.

At 25 you are still young, you have many years in your life left to travel to wonderful places. I hope you get the chance.

Hi kbkbooks, I was delighted to know that you were Studying in Kenya. I also lived in Kenya for a good 12 years and the same place that you were living Mombasa. We lived in the town very close to the Holy Ghost Cathedral.I studied in Loreto Convent, Mombasa. We used to go to Wimpy for snacks which was very close to the Tusks. Sundays were spent enjoying the beautiful Shelly beach and Mama Ngina Drive. Formally we used to live near Likoni beach but then shifted to town because of Ferry restraints. I guess you must have been living somewhere in Likoni or Nyali or Diani Beach. Just a wild guess. It was very nice to come across you. In fact I too am looking out for my friends from school but I don't think you would fit in because My schooling started in 1981 so by then I guess you must have been working.

Jambo! When I went to school in June to August of 1977 it was Allidina Visram just past the big bridge to the Island. I remember Wimpy too. I can still remember the aroma of the vendors' roasted maize. I think the name of the area I was near was Nyali Beach, not really sure. I learned a little bit of Swahili but not much. I don't remember anything about speaking Swahili because I had no way to keep practising all these years. I hope even though you are a bit younger than I am, you will still join as my friend.
