| |  seriously talking i believe that there s no significance AT ALL. but, u know, as player get more n more popular, fan start to worship them, the become hero. their pictures are every where, definetly with their jersey n world will know what number they are. It s all bout 'branding'. Look at Beckham, whose jersey is everywher on earth n people could easily affiliate him with his number 7!!.also sentimental value they have toward the number. i mean, they play hard, n they win n lost with the team, they have nostalgic filing with the number they carry on- u know, among the reasons why Gallas leave chelsea? because morinho want to give his number to sumone else! u see, number could be that significant sumtime
