High school mascot : rebels. Rebel flag offensive?

There is currently a lot of controvery in my town due to the fact that a local high school has as its mascot 'rebels' and that the rebel flag hangs outside the school. Some say that this supports the idea of slavery and that it is offensive. Others say that it is simply a piece of history and should remain. What do you think?

Its a peice of history. The confederate flag is still a part of a few State flags, so why couldn't it be a schools?
It represents an area, not an idea.
