Are there toll roads in your area? How much do they cost?

And what are they paying for? My son is a truck driver and we were talking. The company he works for paid $15million in tolls for 2005! Can you imagine! And he remembers being cautioned about going on a certain road where the other drivers said the tolls would cost about $100. I can't imagine paying $100 to travel a road you had to travel very often! Wow!

We do have 2 toll bridges where I live. One that spans the lake is $3.00 to cross, the other is go across the Mississippi River is $1.00. However, if you don't mind going a bit out of the way there are non-toll bridges that can be used. !

We have autoestradas (turnpikes), CREL (expressways), and bridges here in Portugal that are very expensive. But it is the construction company that built them that get the profits....they say it's for upkeep only...yeah. The only way I would consider travelling a $100 road if someone else was fitting the bill. I have found that the old roads used before the autoestradas came into existance have less traffic now and better eating places along the way. So I mainly keep to these roads.....and the scenery is more interesting. Also the distance is shorter between restrooms. At my age I need a lot more dewdrop inns.

Toll tax is charged by the govt depending on the vehicle you are travelling on. Trucks definitely are charged heavier because they are used for commercial purpose and companies pay it without any hesitation while common masses travelling by car aren't charged sometimes....

Luckily we live in the country, so the only time we have to pay road toll is if we go to the city. Generally we only have to pay $2.80 each way for one motorway but if we visit friends then it is $3.30 each way. Now if we go to another city, which we generally do every month, then we can get off before the toll section, so it costs us nothing. Once we did not realise that the section we drove on had a toll and it costs us $5.95 each way.
Both these cities do have other motorways which charge a toll but we never travel on them, and I do feel it is wrong that people have to pay these expensive toll fees to use them. What really annoys me though is that the majority of these motorways were built with taxpayers money, and then they slug them for a toll as well.

Yeah, that just rediculous. I hate having to pay $100 just to drive on the road. I having seen toll roads since I've left Texas.

I try to avoid toll roads as if they were a plague, and fortunately I live in a city where that is quite easy to do,
but living in a larger city, for instance NY, it would be
much harder to do. I can't imagine paying $100 for a toll,
trucks are almost performing a public service, why would they
charge a company so much for performing an absolutely needed service...SS
