An assembly language is a low-level language and a symbolic representation of the numeric machine codes (and other constants) needed to program a particular CPU architecture; it uses abbreviations of words, mnemonics, to help the programmer remember the effects and properties of individual instructions and registers. Assembly language has therefore replaced most of the error prone and time consuming numeric machine code programming that was used with the very first computers.

The programs are translated* into the target computer's machine code by a utility program called an assembler which performs a more or less isomorphic (one-to-one) translation from mnemonic statements into machine instructions and data, freeing the programmer from tedious tasks such as remembering codes and calculating addresses, offsets, and other constants, while still retaining detailed control over the machine.

An assembly language is (in contrast to most higher-level languages) specific to a certain computer architecture, and while many sophisticated assemblers extend the basic translation with mechanisms to facilitate program development, control of the assembly process, and aid debugging, the language remain machine-specific.

Once widely used for all sorts of programming, assembly is today used more narrowly, primarily for direct hardware manipulation or when critical performance issues are involved. Typical uses are device drivers, low-level embedded systems, and real-time systems, i.e. areas that may need very precise control of the CPU, or other hardware
