Suggestions on how to select the perfect domain name?

I don't like any domain name that's too long. It's harder to remember in IMO. Short and sweet is always better, if you can. People are more likely to remember something with perhaps 6 letters or 2 words then something with 20 letters or 4 words.

As far as a name being simliar to another, it can be good or bad. You might have people that find your domain because they were looking for another and might like what they see. Then you have the other side of the coin where the surfer might get annoyed, as well as the other domain owner.

In the end it's a personal choice and I know you're a smart guy Watch and will find one that works for you in every aspect.

there isnt a perfect domain name, but there are tips to make it look nice. of course, with anything, when you put the words together you ALWAYS make sure that when you read it, it doesn't say something else. example: Pen Island is penisland.net, but when you read that domain, what do you ACTUALLY think of?

you're right your domain name should have relevance to the content in the website, about another domain of the same name being in existence cannot happen, it can only happen if you choose for another extention, before you register your domain it is checked whether it is already registered or not, about naming of your domain if it is easy to memorise then in someway it helps in generating more traffic to your site.

I think it should be something creative, so people might remember it, or even better, related to the content of the page. When you are in the market for domains, you find so many that are already taken, but not really used, just waiting to be bought by someone else. So, pretty much I think it all depends on what your intentions are with the name of the domain. If you want to use it for something specific, and develop it, then you should find something that really matches what you want.

The commercial theory is "the less competition the better", There's a thing called wordtracker, (which you should get in one click on a search of that word), which give a free demo of how search engines rate relevance.
Market profile and product image is another major consideration. Assess your market,the image you want to project, and your product identity, even if you're only doing a hobby site, so you will be findable.
*Do not, ever,* get confused with existing commercial sites, (more trouble than anyone needs) or pick a name which relates to a public enquiry, which has happened.
Search your ideas before applying for a name, and search names similar, for your own peace of mind.

It's my opinion that you make the domain name perfect AFTER you buy it. Who would have ever thought that Google.com would be a perfect domain name until they made it one? Even though my GetYoursFree.com sounds like a better name to attract people, it doesn't hold a candle to Google.
