Anticardiolipin syndrome (APS) is characterized by recurrent venous or arterial clots, recurrent fetal loss, and a decrease in platelets. The cause is usually related to a family history of clotting or fetal loss.

Diagnosis is through a blood test to detect antiphospholipid antibodies (anticoagulant and anticardiolipin antibodies).

Treatment is managing the underlying cause (if present), which could be lupus or thrombocytopenia. Anticoagulants might be given to prevent blood clotting which in turn requires monitoring due to an increased risk of bleeding. (I'm an R.N.)
