Most important things to have in college dorm room? |
| |
| I know it might seem like a strange question, but it has been years (more than I care to admit) since I was in college. I know that times have changed. My daughter will be going to college this fall, and I want to know what she will need most! I know that there are things that are 'nice to have' but what are the things that end up being essential? She has a laptop computer, bedding and a small refrigerator (donated by a friend who has completed college) already. What else would you recommend? Thanks for your help myLot community! | | | | | |

| | The most important thing I took was this small crock pot. I would put green beans in it and cook them all day. So good when I came back to the dorm after having class all day. We also used it to make cheese dip and soups. I wouldn't have survived without it. | | | | | | |

| | OH what a great idea! The dorm regulations say no open heat elements..but that wouldn't have one! She had so hoped to take a toaster oven..but they are taboo. I will get her a small crock pot!!! Thanks!!! | | | |

| | I would have to say a large dry erase board. When I was in college, my roommates and I would also use one. Of course, we would write phone messages on there for each other, but we would also use it to let eachother know where we were going and when we would be back, in case of emergencies. I found it really neat and handy. I do have to agree about the crock pot though. That is actually a really nice idea. When I was in college, I got put in a dorm hall ontop of the hill, when everything else was at the bottom. There were two dorm building that were connected through a tunnel and there was a cafetria down there, but it had weird hours. We were always wasting money on pizza and all that good stuff. | | | | | | |

| | Microwaves are great if they are allowed, also coffee pots if allowed and she likes coffee. Another necessity is small reading lamps that can be clipped or hooked on the wall, so as to be able to read after your roommate goes to bed or before they get up in the morning (or offer to them to use if you are the one trying to sleep). Also, nice is to have a step stool, especially if she is short, as most dorms have beds that are four feet off the ground (the space underneath really does make it worth it.) | | | | | | |

| | The crock pot is an excellant idea so are all the others mentioned. I myself had a very good alarm clock. I had a big ben and at times had to put it in a boiler to wake me up. When you are in a dorm you never get any sleep and it is so easy to over sleep so make sure she has a very loud and dependable alarm clock. Even if she is easy to wake up now and a light sleeper I promis that will change. LOL | | | | | | |

| | My daughter is in her first year at college so we've just been through this. First, make sure her laptop has security on it in case it gets stolen. There is a high theft of laptops. Do you know if she'll have community bath? If so, she'll need a bathroom caddy; a plastic caddy to carry her shampoo, body wash, etc. My daughter's dorm did not allow nails or tape on the walls so get lots of command strips! Get them early cause the stores run out. It's a good idea to see the dorm before you go. Some closets are very small and you might need a shoe caddy that fits over the door. Crates and under-bed containers for shelving and storing. Don't forget lots of light weight frames to put all her friends pics in! She'll have a blast! | | | | | | |

| | If you can get a bigger fridge, turst me the little square ones don't hold much. Then I'd recommend a microwave, electric fry pan, something to cook with. It will save her a lot of money in the long run. Go by what the school allows, some don't allow anything, some only microwaves, etc. If she can cook her own things then the bigger fridge will definitly come in handy. Sounds like you have the basics though of though. It's been awhile since I was in school but those look like what she'd need. | | | | | | |
