|  I cant help but fell a little raped by the whole windows/microsoft works deal. Why must I pay 600 dollar for a computer and then 300 for soft ware? Something went terribly wrong there, and the whole thing is is that you need to pay it so that your computer functions correctly.

| |  if you want you can actually not install the window that comes with a computer and get 100 dollars of so back from the company. its a tricky process. if you even start up to microsoft OS once you can't do it.

| |  This is the problem with the world today. The majority of people are capable of finding alternative software etc which costs nothing. For example, if you bought a new machine which came with a version of windows on it then you fine. You can get a copy of "Open Office" which is a free office suit made by the open source community. It will allow you to do anything that you would normally do with Microsoft Office or Microsoft Works.
If you bought a machine and didn't get an operating system with it then you can get a copy of Ubuntu which is a free operating system again made by the open source community. The main jist of the post is that there is always an alternative to buying software (well for the most part anyway).

| | Then I would be tempted to go to the school and suggest that if they require you to use Microsoft office as part of your course then they should be willing to provide you with a temporary license which you can use for the duration of the course. (these do exists because the university has a similar scheme set up for other software packages)
Tbh the methods that you use within Microsoft Office can be asily transferred over to the other applications which you have installed, with little effort. Thats the approach they have gone for with Open Office. The idea behind it was to allow users to utilise the skills they learn on courses and implement them into other packages.

With regards, Excel depending on which elements of Excel you are learning you should be able to carry out the same elements with teh other packages. IIRC the only thing you can't do with OpenOffice that you can with MS Office is the ability to use Visual Basic for Applications. Not sure if this is availalbe under MS Works or not, havn't used it for ages. Not sure what else to suggest really, the only thing I would say would be approach your course tutor and explain the stuation to him/her. They will have probably come accross the same problem numerous times in the past and I would imagine they have some sort of solution in place. | | | |

| | Yes, it is true that you have to pay a lot for the Microsoft Operating system and for that reason OPENSOURCE is becoming more popular now a days, and I think you alone need not to buy all the software required by you, if you ask your friends will also take a share in that and you combinedly can use that software, and also there are some companies which offer you at a less cost.
