Why Do People Get So Much Flak For Smoking

Yes, I'm sick of it. I am a smoker, and to me it's very simple. I'm legal age. I'm a full grown adult fully capable of knowing the side effects, risks and consequences. Cigarettes are a legal product. If I, as a legal adult, want to purchase a product I know to be bad for me, that's my choice.

And the infamous come back is "but a soda doesn't hurt the people around the person drinking it!!" .... yet those same people drive ... and I don't harrass them constantly about the exhaust they're pumping out.

It is so refreshing to see a non smoker who doesn't approach the subject full of lectures and condemnation and thinks of it in terms of common sense. I'm an adult, cigarettes are legal, it's my cash being spend and my right to choose.:)

Smoking affects people around you. Watching someone eat a hamburger isn't going to kill you. Second hand smoke will.

People are a pain... ai't they?

I just responded to a post where someone wanted to know what she could do about a total stranger smoking on the front of his children in his own living room.

I was glad to see that the Australian government has changed its recent anti-smoking ads. It used to be... you are going to die.
Now it is... you have a 50% chance to die from smoking.

I was born in 1951 and exposed to second secondary smoke during all my childhood from my father and grand-father.
I took up smoking at 19 and I have smoked one pack of cigarettes a day ever since. That is 37 years. During that time I visited the doctor 3 times... the last time was in 1994.

People have been telling me for the last 20 years that I am going to die. Yes... I know... from old age.

Most of my generation would have been exposed to secondary smoke when they were children... and many would have taken up smoking.

But guess what... the life expectancy of my generation has jumped by 10 years. In 1970, men were expected to live until 69. Now they live until 79.

Thank you, it is nice to see a non-smoker who is as tired of it as we are.

There are many things that are bad for us and that most of us and older generations have been exposed to for years. To say smoking is to cause for all the things wrong with people is wrong. Unless they can prove they were never exposed to smog, car exhaust, asbestos, lead based paint, uranium (which was used in some paints and in watches to make them glow in the dark), DDT, and a host of other things, then how can you say it was due to smoking or by second hand smoke?

I do have asthma, however smoking and cigarette smoke does not bother it. What does are allergens such as pets, certain flowers and the big one perfumes. Perfumes effect many people and yet no one goes up to people and tell them to take a bath. Many perfumes can cause me to have an attack or cause me to have a migraine and I know I'm not the only one to suffer from this, yet no one complains to a person's face about it. However if it's a cigarette even if they are in the smoking area people will come up and complain.

Why can't people leave others alone? Why do they feel a need to point, accuse or just stick their noses in where it doesn't belong. I've seen discussions in here and in the real life from non-smokers asking about how to tell neighbors, friends and even strangers about the dangers of smoking. My thought is unless they are in your house/car leave them be, it's none of your affair. Leave them alone and they will leave you alone.

i'm a smoker. its the influence of my friend for me to leran smoking, its hard to stop smoking, but i really feel to smoke everytime i finish eating, and when i nervous it really make me feel comfortable and more relax.

first GOD gave us the free will so therefore we have to use it.. BUT of course everyone is not using that free will in a rightful manner..

yeah let them do what they want.. it for us, who are health conscious individuals to stay with them or get away from them..

right?? but first try to convince them about healthy living..

when was the last time your clothes smelled like soda? when was the last time you had mcdonald's blown in your face? Basically, smokers stink. But, i did vote against the measure in Washington State to ban smoking in public places such as restaurants. I think that in that instance, restaurant owners should be able to choose for themselves.

I do feel smokers get shat on but i never enjoy having smoke blown in my face at 8 in morning as i get off the train.
