If you see that the one who posted the discussion has already chosen a best response, meaning (I assume) that he is already satisfied, do you hesitate in adding your contribution, or just do it for points?

I won't respond to discussion where the best response is already selected, because the aim of the discussion is to get or give some meaningful solution for a topic; if the best response is selected, that means the debate is resolved. So I never want respond to a resolved discussion.

I'll still respond. I only respond to discussions I actually have something to say about, so I'll say my piece regardless of whether or not a best response has been chosen or not. That doesn't end the discussion, as far as I'm concerned, and it's not much of a deterrent to me.
