Dog skin problems

My chocolate lab puppy has lost all of the hair between his hind legs and a little ways up onto his belly. There only seems to be mild irritation for him... a little scratching now and then. It sort of smells bad some days - like when a dog gets a yeast infection in his ears. Unfortunately, I don't have the money to take him to the vet right now. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to treat this? I was wondering if maybe an anti-fungal/anti-yeast cream might help?

Our german sheppard was like that and it turned out to be his thyroid, usually the smell you smell is the first sign, and max had to go on thyroid medication, also our vet told us to bathe him in dove soap it mild and help the skin and it really did work

I've been avoiding bathing him too much beacause I was afraid that it would dry him out more... but I'll have to try the Dove next time. Thanks!

What type of food do you feed your lab? On the long term you can help skin and fur issues by feeding a good quality food, like Merrick, Wysong, or Wellness. Don't use the excuse that you can't afford a quality food. Quality foods have less fillers, so your dog will eat less. Dogs on quality food eat 30-50% less food than dogs on a cheap food with fillers. They also have less health issues and live longer lives. HTH, Crystal

I was feeding him Diamond large breed puppy food for a long time, but when he hit one year old I switched to the same Purina Complete formula that I feed my other dog. It's not the cheapest, but it's not all that expensive either. Maybe I should do a little research about foods...?

Actually if you use cortisone cream it should work for the irritation. My dog had the same thing and they told me calamine lotion would help with the itching, but you have to make sure the dog doesn't lick it. That can make them sick.
