I'm not sure what you mean by 'cover all the fields.' The ranking covers the player's performance in tournaments over the past 52 weeks, which I think is a pretty good measure of not only their current results but their consistency over the entire season.

The ranking really just refects how many points they have earned from tournaments. Any given day, someone ranked below someone else could beat them. I guess the rankings also help to try to push players to win so they can reach #1 and become well-known and thus make more money. Same goes for USTA rankings--I don't think they are very accurate.

I don't know all of the factors in the WTA ranking, but it does encourage players to play more tournaments, so that fans can go out and see them. In the past some players would go for the prestigous, big-money tournaments like Grand Slams and a few others, and skip the rest.

The rankings are based on results from the previous 52 weeks and take into account the rank of the opponent, how far the player got in the tournament, and how competitive the tournament it. The Grand Slams are the top level and then there are Tier I, II, etc. tournaments.

No system is every completely accurate or fair, but I think this one tries to balance in a lot of factors and reward players who perform consistently over time.

Lets face it, did for henman?

I don't think it does, I do believe it helps but I disagree that it proves who's the best because I'm sure there's great players who could beat the top five who don't play professionally.
