I hate collection agencies  | |  Every year it seems I do battle with one based on a debt that was either paid many years ago, or one that isn't mine. My recent one is a collection for 1800.00 for a Verizon phone/account that was not mine.
These bloodsuckers purchase and repurchase debts and will call whatever the last phone number/address happened to be. There is little or no regulation, or shall I say meaningful legislation that punishes them for their continued harrassment.
I think it would be better if the original company with the debt would handle any collection. That way, should any abuse occur, the company itself would be liable. This would be more beneficial to the consumer and to the company as they could probably recover more of the debt than selling it to a collection agency for pennies on the dollar

The shipping company phoned and informed me I would have to pay €54 duty. That was fine and I said I would have a cheque ready when the delivery man called. On arrival of the dvd player, I paid the cheque and got a receipt and thought no more about it. Ten days later I received a very nasty latter from a debt collection agency demanding that I pay €54 to them plus costs. I checked to see if the cheque was cashed and it was, so I went ape and picked up the phone and called them. It was like talking to a brick wall, so I told them I would see them in court. I then wrote a letter to them and said I would be claiming for my phone calls, postage stamps, time, and stress caused. That was two years ago, so hopefully I will never hear from them again.

This is also called peer to peer fundraising.
There is a program that gives people free cellular service, free cellphones and free monthly minutes at SafeLinkWireless.com. They also include Caller ID, Call Waiting and VoiceMail.
Sometimes you can look up something on the Internet with the word free and see these great websites.
