Read any good books lately? |
|
I'm currently reading Dan Simmons' A Winter Haunting...very creepy but good. I always have a hard time, though, figuring out what to get at the library. Any suggestions on a good book to snuggle up with this winter?

1. butterflygirl (438) | 3 years ago | My favourite book is 'Mamma Day' by Gloria Naylor. It a book I always pick up to re-read when i'm feeling a bit down. It's a love story, family saga and a tale of the supernatural all rolled into one. It's really funny and you can tell that the author is a 'people watcher' by some of the comments she makes. It's a tale about two very different lands, the modern world and the cut off somewhat old fashioned island of Willow Springs and it's inhabitants. The story is told by three people the general narrator, Mama Day's great niece Ophelia, and her love interest George. It sounds complicated but once you get into it you might just find that it's the best thing you've ever read - I did.

brimia (6187) | 3 years ago | I loved "The Secret Life of Bees". I haven't read the Hyperion series yet but I'm enjoying "a winter haunting" so much that I'll probably give them a shot. Thanks for the suggestions!

Withoutwings (4692) | 3 years ago | You're welcome. It may take you a bit to actually get into the first book... but after the first couple chapters Hyperion is really good. I haven't read any of his other books, but they are on my list.

5. awonderfullife (2397) | 3 years ago | I am reading "Little Children" by Tom Perrotta. It's about catty suburban Moms. They made a movie about it starring Kate Winslet. It's pretty good so far-- I'm only on chapter 2 but it's holding my interest.

awonderfullife (2397) | 3 years ago | UPDATE on this book: I'm done with it. I couldn't stand it. Too many creepy characters-- a child molester, a perverted husband, adulterers. There wasn't one likeable character in the entire book!

| 8. dreamsoffrance (17) | 3 years ago | Working at a middle school library, I tend to read young adult books. If these are you things, I can recommend "Uglies" and "Pretties" by Scott Westerfeld. There is a third book in the series I haven't read yet but I want to read it.
If you don't mind a book for even younger readers, I just read "Frindle" by Andrew Clements. This book can be read in a short time but I really enjoyed it.

9. hockeygal4ever (5357) | 3 years ago | I read a wonderful book called Beneath a Marble Sky, a historical fiction about the building of the Taj Mahal. Awesome story. Also just finished an autobiography about a woman who served as a WAAC in the war and fought to obtain veterans rights after she was crippled, called Beyond Dancing.

10. LightninStrike (2454) | 3 years ago | Right now i am reading "one fine day in the middle of the night", by Christopher Brookmyre...a british author. If you like sarcastic black humor then this is is your book and your author. He's funny, even though he can be explicit and brutal, but you really laugh a lot. I recommend it.
