I'm currently reading Dan Simmons' A Winter Haunting...very creepy but good. I always have a hard time, though, figuring out what to get at the library. Any suggestions on a good book to snuggle up with this winter?

My favourite book is 'Mamma Day' by Gloria Naylor. It a book I always pick up to re-read when i'm feeling a bit down. It's a love story, family saga and a tale of the supernatural all rolled into one. It's really funny and you can tell that the author is a 'people watcher' by some of the comments she makes. It's a tale about two very different lands, the modern world and the cut off somewhat old fashioned island of Willow Springs and it's inhabitants. The story is told by three people the general narrator, Mama Day's great niece Ophelia, and her love interest George. It sounds complicated but once you get into it you might just find that it's the best thing you've ever read - I did.

I am currently reading "Anansi Boys" by Neil Gaimon. It's kind of fantasy I guess you could say. The story is based on old African folklore, but made modern. I'm about halfway through the book at this point and it's pretty good.

I recommend "The Time Traveler's Wife" by Audrey Nefeigger, "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd, "A Home At The End of the World" by Michael Cunningham, and "Running with Scissors" by Augusten Burroughs

Have you read the "Hyperion" series by Dan Simmons? Those are some of my favorite books.

I loved "The Secret Life of Bees". I haven't read the Hyperion series yet but I'm enjoying "a winter haunting" so much that I'll probably give them a shot.
Thanks for the suggestions!

You're welcome. It may take you a bit to actually get into the first book... but after the first couple chapters Hyperion is really good. I haven't read any of his other books, but they are on my list.

I love James Pattersen. He is my favorite. If you buy any of his books over the last couple years, you will love them all.

I used to read a lot of James Patterson but haven't for a while now. Thanks for the reminder!

I felt Along Came A spiders ending was a little too unbelievable but overall enjoy his books.

I am reading "Little Children" by Tom Perrotta. It's about catty suburban Moms. They made a movie about it starring Kate Winslet. It's pretty good so far-- I'm only on chapter 2 but it's holding my interest.

myLot reputation of 99/100. brimia (6187)   ranked 638 out of 10,227 in reading  3 years ago

I've never heard of it but it sounds interesting. Let me know how it was when you've finished.

UPDATE on this book: I'm done with it. I couldn't stand it. Too many creepy characters-- a child molester, a perverted husband, adulterers. There wasn't one likeable character in the entire book!

Wow...good to know...sorry it was so bad.

Lol at first I read where you said it was good and I decided to read it, and then I read where you said you couldn't stand it. Lol that was pretty funny. I may still read it, but I hope I don't get creeped out. Thanks for your input!

The only one I've read was the first Harry Potter because friends recommended it. I didn't care for it though.
I looked up the Eleven Minutes story and it sounds really interesting. I'll look into all of them. Thanks for the suggestions!

Well, I've just finished 'Lili' by Annie Wang. It was quite enjoyable, I can recommend it if you like books about China.

Working at a middle school library, I tend to read young adult books. If these are you things, I can recommend "Uglies" and "Pretties" by Scott Westerfeld. There is a third book in the series I haven't read yet but I want to read it.

If you don't mind a book for even younger readers, I just read "Frindle" by Andrew Clements. This book can be read in a short time but I really enjoyed it.

I read a wonderful book called Beneath a Marble Sky, a historical fiction about the building of the Taj Mahal. Awesome story. Also just finished an autobiography about a woman who served as a WAAC in the war and fought to obtain veterans rights after she was crippled, called Beyond Dancing.

I like historical fiction so I'll definitely check out Beneath a Marble Sky...it's sounds interesting.

Right now i am reading "one fine day in the middle of the night", by Christopher Brookmyre...a british author. If you like sarcastic black humor then this is is your book and your author. He's funny, even though he can be explicit and brutal, but you really laugh a lot. I recommend it.
