What's the best Shakespeare work? email this discussion to a friend?

Rather than derailing another thread, I'll just make a new post. I want to know if anyone out there is a fan of Shakespeare, and if so, which of his works you enjoyed, and why. I haven't read Shakespeare in years, but I still remember enough to know why I liked some of his works:

Othello
Macbeth
Hamlet
Romeo and Juliet
Merchant of Venice
King Lear

Among these... Hamlet: This one I enjoyed as well. I find it amusing how everyone dies in the end. Plus, it has the best quote ever and no it's not the "To be or not to be" nonsense. It's, "There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy."

I've also read The Tempest A Midsummer Night's Dream, and several other works but they don't stack up to the ones above, in my opinion.

I absolutely love Shakespeare and think he still stands as one of the master storytellers of all time. someone give you a quote? Guess either the Bible or shakespeare and you'll be right 90% of the time.

I have so many of his works on my shelf. I particularly like 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', 'Othello', 'Hamlet', 'The Taming of the Schrew' and many of his poems. It is so hard to choose a standout, but.......

My favorite is MacBeth. A tale so sorid that it sticks with you.

My favorite quote from this:

Life's but a walking shadow, A poor player
That stuts and frets his hour upon the stage
and then is heard no more. It is a tale
told by an idiot, full of sound and Fury,
signifying nothing.

I love Shakespeare. I am fortunate to live in Southern Oregon...Ashland hosts one of the largest Shakespearean Festivals in the world. They host plays from spring until fall. It is really great, if you ever get the chance to visit. Now, for the topic, my favorite Sharkepearean work would be "Taming of the Shrew". It is comical and full of wit. I also am a huge fan of his sonnets.

I think one of the most famous works of shakespeare is of course romeo and juliet, but my favorite is The Taming of the Schrew... i think it is well written and an amazing story and if you pay attention many movies model off of this script... it is interesting work and i could read it over and over.

I agree with you about your list. I think the comedies and the histories don't hold up as well in our time as the tragedies.
My favorite is King Lear or maybe Macbeth. They have so many vivid characters, and I love to see how they manipulate each other.

Some of my favorite moments are probably unintentional humor.
One is in Lear when he has suffered greatly at the hands of his offspring and someone is telling him that Poor Tom is insane. Lear asks if he has daughters, is that what drove him mad?

Speaking of madness, I love when they are sending Hamlet to England perhaps to cure his madness, or if not, then they think it will not be noticed there. Hah!
