5. nicestuffz (142) | 3 years ago | I would recommend using Linux to use a server but there are some points that you must consider in choosing the right distribution for you. 1. Consider your server hardware especially when you're using high end servers from Intel, Dell, Compaq, IBM, Asus, etc. Linux distributions sometimes experience compatibility issues regarding these high end servers, commonly on kernel packages about sata/scsi drives, hot-swap controllers, CPU specs and others. You can first check on the servers web site the technical aspects of your server and the tested Linux distributions for it. 2. Consider your main type of use. As you said,it will be used for ISP purposes so better have a Linux distibution that are capable of having all the services that you will need. (e.g. Apache, Samba, Squid, etc) But i think almost every Linux distribution can have these pakages, the only problem is on how will you enable/configure them because sometimes other packages are not installed, you need to download and install certain packages for it to work. 3. Lastly, consider your expertise. If you already satisfy the first two factors, then it would be better if you will have the Linux distribution that you know better..
Thats my point of view for this topic. Thanks

ryanrudolf (2440) | 3 years ago | i agree with this! why? we used to work together in the same company, and he really is good with servers and such. regarding your question, i would say go for linux. why? imagine this: linux is based on unix, and unix has been around for more than 25 years. before windows 95 was born, unix was the backbone of the internet. just imagine how stable and flexible that is. the flexible part depends on your experience though. i would recommend using Fedora Core as the main distribution. i have personally used this and i have configured it just like ISPs do -- mail server, web server, ftp server, virtual hosting, etc. there are lots of tutorials out there specifically targeted for fedora. visit uncle google and he will point you out in the right direction. im sure that will help!:)
