Optimism- Crock or Rock?

Most people will know it's almost impossible to avoid the "feel good by committee" approach to life. Every form of self-help involves some pep talk. Personally, I think it's a crock unless you back it up with something practical.
But- Something positive must motivate anyone. People don't live on the basis of predicted failure. There has to be some positive, forward-looking rock of personal perspective that drives people to try to achieve.
Anyone who's read Voltaire's Candide will know that optimism is an easy target (and a pretty appropriate one)for anybody living on Earth. Yet people must hope, and perhaps that's the real root of optimism.
