Conecting with other collectors | | Hello,
I've been collecting about 47 years, my main interests are the Classics and US Postal History. I'm curious about the material others collect and open discussion about the hobby in general. If you like, let my know your interests.

I find I am most attracted to stamps with bright colors, old fashioned portraits and artwork. There are so many ways to categorize them, by country, topic, price, etc. that I think I will have to limit myself to just American stamps.

nrnotrare (417) | 3 years ago | Hello VKXY62....
All of the subjects you've listed can be found on stamps, and they are on my list of favorite things also. (I've got a small but decent collection of fossils and a few arrowheads that I've found too.) A short soak in cool water is the prefered method of removing hinges. Pulling them off dry almost always creates a thin spot. Placing some in Hagner pages would be best for higher value items. My rule of thumb has always been that the method of mounting should not be worth more than the item, but anything worth more than $5.00 should not be hinged.
Conversing with the Astronauts must have been exciting!
Flag wave??

VKXY62 (940) | 3 years ago | Hi again Tom,
a flag wave is advertising yourself or your interests to others, for the purpose of making contacts.:-)
I usually wave my flag about HAM radio.
I have also finally posted those stamps of to you. I got them on Monday, but was late home every night this week.
Our post office is open Saturday mornings fortunately.
So, in about a week or so, you should get a little white cardboard box, about 6 x 5 x 3/4.
I'm not telling you what's in it, that would spoil the surprise.
I'll have to get some hagner sheets for stamps. The hinge/hagner change over has been a wannado for a while. I'm just glad it is as simple as a soak in water.
See you in the soup my friend, er, catch you on mylot.
Australian language can be a bit strange, I guess.

I had a silly grin on my face for days.

nrnotrare (417) | 3 years ago | Hello VKXY62....
I love mystery boxes...."there could be anything in there"!! If you have any trouble finding Hagner pages, this is where I get mine: www.freewaysupplies.com
(98% of all stamps soak of easily in cool water. You will find a few newer ones that are almost impossible to remove from paper. The only choices are to trim the backing paper really close or save them on cover. Which ever you prefer.
I'll see if I can find something you will find interesting.

dragonstar13 (1211) | 3 years ago | Tom, I'm still puzzled about soaking the stamps to get them off envelopes, etc. After I remove them, some but not all of the gum comes off the back of the stamp, is this normal/desired? Should I be removing all of the glue? Or none?

nrnotrare (417) | 3 years ago | Hello.........
There are some new stamps that are just about impossible to soak off of envelope paper. Many collectors simply choose to collect those issues, still on the paper, trimming them closely or leaving them on cover. I use both, keeping the best condition items on cover.

nrnotrare (417) | 3 years ago | Hi.....
For some of the newer plastic stamps that still retain some gum after soaking in water, one solution is a drop or two of rubbing alcohol. Rub carefully from the middle to the edges to remove any excess gum.
