Homeschooling, should it be banned?  email this discussion to a friend?

We homeschool, three kids, always have, yet we catch so much grief from people who say we aren't socializing our children enough for the real world. They believe they'll grow up with book smarts and nothing else. We also are acused of keeping money from the public school system by not enrolling our kids there. Seems to me, with three kids on A averages, we must be doing something right, or are the grades too much of a trade for what they're missing out on. I don't see that they're missing anything, do you? Has anyone had any esperiance with friends in this dilima ?

Yes. I think homeschooling should be banned. In regular school children know how to interact with some other children, they learn how to play and how to socialise.

True, they learn how to play, they get shot, they get pregnant, get involved with drugs, etc. We don'y hide our kids at home, two of them have jobs and interact just fine with public school friends. So if they are socialized, what would the difference be? ( i am considering taking them out of homeschooling by the way, so i do listen to thers opinions here.

learning is more than just books...or else how they can be street smart....

bgreg2 (18)   ranked 3,083 out of 3,267 in family  6 years ago

Thank you, a very good answer. The question is, why do they need to learn to be street smart? I mean, none of them are stupid at all, very intellagent actually. Do you need to be thrown in the middle of the mire to have an understanding that you should stay out of it? ( By the way, I grew up street smart, so I've seen both sides).Street smart isn't always the best smarts if you will.

I, personally don't see what the big deal is with homeschooling. The children actually do get socialized..contrary to popular belief. They participate in activities such as sports and everything else. At home, atleast you'll know they'll earn the attention they deserve and need if they need extra attention. Homeschooling is better than attending public school in many ways. No full classrooms, no horrible teachers, and all of that other stuff that occurs in public schools.

I agree. I think the problem is alot of parents should not be homeschooloing, as they really don't do anything. The kids in public schools get minimal attention at school and most seem to be latch key kids at home. I think public scool is being used by alot of parents as a baby sitter so the parents can have a career. Sorry, touchy subject I guess.

you are right a lot of parents SHOULDNT be homeschooling BUT how do you screen something like that...I homeschooled my children but we didnt do it in a structured fashion..I actually UNschooled them and for me personally (and my kids of course) it worked out beautifully...They decided to go back to school after a couple of yrs AND after movign to another country and they are both A students and on the merit and honour rolls...and as far as socializing goes they did just fine...Granted my daughter is somewhat of a loner but that has nothing to do with being homeschooled.

I dont think it should be banned but there should be some sort of FAIR screening or maybe monitoring of sorts in place...

I agree. One point you mad eyhat's intresting, my daughter, actually two of them are somewhat loners. Both do very well at their jobs around others, and very well with their close friends, but are what you might call loners. Is it a loner by choice, or are we effcting that by homeschooling? Intresting pattern though.

I homeschool, my child, and I have 2 step daughters who go to public school, my son and 1 of my step daughters is the same age, my other step daughter is a year ahead. He has learned things that in Public School they refuse to teach, or only do it in there point of view and he has not learned things that will end up killing him, making him believe God doesnt exist, and words and actions no one should ever know. I wouldnt want Home Schooling to be banned, I think more people should take there kids out of public schools and Home School. Just Last week at the public School my step daughter attends, she witnessed, a fight, drugs, a sub teacher getting arrested for taking pictures of teen girls (chest), and they learned 2 lines to one of Poes poems, that left them more confused and hating all poetry, she learned that we came from apes, and she is way in tune with all the slang, boy's, different types of drugs, making fun of people who are less fortunate, etc... The list goes on and on.
