Mother or Child: Who's to die?

A doctor friend was telling me about a difficult choice that she had to make while doing volunteer work in Africa. Would you choose to save the mother or the baby when childbirth gets complicated? Why?

In the natural order of things, we should save the mother. It was just an unfortunate pregnancy, better luck next time.

Manong - are you Visayan or Ilocano? The question was, who will you save?

i would sve the mother, for although her heart will be broken, she can have other children a child in a place like Africa has no chance. without a mother to feed it itwill die and then two lives would be lost when one could have been saved.

Judyt00 - this is a well reasoned response. It is very true that in most countries in Africa the situation is quite bleak. I have been to many countries in the continent and the conditions are appaling for the the general population. However, we have also seen so many wealthy families. And boy -o-boy are they wealthy.
