People respond to discussion because
1) they are interested
2) they can relate to what you just posted
3) they think it is worth to reply

I agree pinoyskull.
However, I think it's difficult to find interesting arguments.
Also, it's difficult to choose the right interest in which of the discussion.
Finally, I always consider the author's reputation of the discussion and then I read all the discussion, if the rating is not too low.

Why do you get fed up? Just because people do not respond to your discussion? Please check few points about the discussion you have started: Have you posted them in right forum? Have you clearly mentioned your point of view or what you want to know? Are the discussion points of general interested? Generaly nobody is interested in what you say if they are not gettin any thing from discussion with you, so they will not reply.
Lastly, eventhough you are more experienced then me atleast on mylot, do not raise any controversial issue to start with. Hope this will help you. Keep trying. Best of luck.
