American Sign Language - Should We All Learn It?  email this discussion to a friend?

I learned earlier last year that American Sign Language is the third most spoken language in the U.S. (after English and Spanish, respectively), and since I have always had a passion for sign language, I decided that I really need to learn it.

But it got me to thinking: in today's day and age, it's good to be blingual, and really, it's necessary. When I was in school, I chose to take French (I lived in Detroit and thought at the time that being able to speak with my French-Canadian neighbors was most important...should've taken Spanish), and now I am seriously considering signing up for a local ASL class. I do not personally know anyone who is deaf, but in the event that I meet someone or in an emergency, I would love to be ready and helpful.

Plus, it's a beautiful language.

My question is, do you think that signing is important enough for people to learn in general, and that signing should be offered in schools as a "foreign" (I use this term loosely) language?

I've always tried to teach myself sign language, but I could never get the hang of it. It is a beautiful language, though, and we should all at least know a little bit about it.

I just rated your post a +, as it is really very good. I like your logic, and cannot agree enough with you. We all should learn it at an early age in schools. Great idea. Thanks for the post.

Thanks a lot!

I enjoy reading your posts as well, and thanks for rating this one!

I really believe that it is important, and more than likely I will be contacting my State government within the next couple of years (after I learn it first, of course) about offering it in schools.

I always wanted to learn sign language - I used to know how to sign the alphabet- (when I was in grade school we had a deaf class there) but it's been so long since i used it that I have forgotten most of it. I think it would be great to use it as a universal language, now if we could just convince the rest of the world, we would be in business. I also think it would be great if they offered it in high schools, even as a half year course, I took speed reading for half a year I would have gladly taken sign language for the other half.
