peanut allergy | | My son is 7 years old and has been fatally allergic to peanuts since he was two. Up until the night that he went into anaphalactic shock (after eating a single peanut M&M) he had eaten peanuts and peanut butter fine! The doctor explained that an allergy to peanuts can develop overnight just like an allergy to penicillin. We have 3 prescribed epi-pens that we take everywhere we go! (Epi-pens are automatic injectors of epinepherine) They can be administered every 15 minutes until you reach a hospital.Fortunately we have managed to avoid contact entirely so he's sufered no other reactions. We have no peanut products in our home WHATSOEVER! If anyone were to eat anything containing peanuts and then just kiss my son on the cheek, he would go into anaphalactic shock! For those of you who aren't familiar with "AS", it causes your throat to close up and your blood pressure bottoms out. Someone suffering from "AS" could be lost in as little as 4 minutes. Any one else have a family member or friend that suffers from fatal food allergies?

I recently was tested and they told me I am allergic to peanuts and soy. Not to the extent that your son is, thank goodness! But there is a real chance it could get worse.
My biggest allergy (besides hay fever) is citrus fruit. If I get orange juice on my hands they start to swell. And of course my son loves oranges, so to peel them I have to wear plastic gloves (plastic because I am also allergic to latex). I can't even use cleaners with natural orange or lemon.
Thankfully, though, so far it is not life threatening. Is there any chance he will grow out of it?

One persons honest mistake - made with the best of intentions - can take him away from us so quickly. I don't want him out of my sight! His allergist says that there is a 20% chance that he can grow out of it completely. Provided he does not come in contact with the allergen. Any additonal contact and reactions would increase his sensitivity and the severity of the attack. I was sorry to hear of your allergies. It's bad to be allergic to citrus and soy. They ar both everywhere you go! Are you also allergic to trace amounts - for example can you eat foods that have been manufactured in a facility that processes citrus or soy products? When mentioned earlier that we homeschool our son I was in no way criticizing parents that choose to put their children in public schools. It is just our personal preference.

| | 2. CarlJennings (1573) | 3 years ago | Im allergic to peanuts. Not so badly as i can go into AS but it is quite bad. I will start to choke pretty badly and my throat swells up a bit - but not too much. I still need to get to a hospital quick, but thankfully i dont go into AS!

Peanut allergies account for over 80 percent of the fatal or near-fatal reaction call anaphylactic shock. An anaphylactic reaction can cause the airways to constrict, making breathing difficult and your blood pressure to drop to life-threatening levels. Symptoms include abdominal pain, nausea, stomach cramps, swelling of the face, itching, wheezing, and hives. The proteins found in peanuts trigger the immune system to reaction. Antibodies and histamines are releases into the blood stream in an attempt to neutralize the peanut protein. These chemicals trigger the allergic symptoms. In sever cases Epinephrine, also call Adrenaline, is administered to control the anaphylaxis reaction.
