Biblically and physically speaking, fasting is best for us. Physically, fasting helps us remove the toxins in our body. Minor tumors can be melt through fasting. It also reduces the risk of having deseases. Biblically speaking, it is one way to pleased God. If you want to ask something, talked with God sincerely in secret and do fasting in secret, that nobody will see. By that God will surely listen to you.

In the Bible, when Jesus Christ was fasting, He didn't eat for 30 days and 30 nights. Since it says eat, He was most probably taking water.
Fasting is not necessarily having to withhold ourselves from all foods the whole day. If one doesn't eat while the sun is up and takes food only during sundown, he is fasting. If one withholds himself from all kinds of meaty foods for say, a month or two, so a wish may be granted, he is fasting.
Fasting therefore, doesn't mean taking nothing at all. Whenever you sacrifice a meal for a cause or a type of food for some duration, that is fasting. Be sure though that it won't be detrimental to your health. The doctor may be able to tell that your body can go through with it without much damage caused to any of your systems. Consult him if you feel the need before going through any fasting session.

I just watched a special on this, some say it cleanses your body, some say it is bad for you because it is depleating your body of some nutrients. I think if you want to do this you should not do it alot. I am not sure how it cleanses your body. Our bodies need fuel.

Fasting is not the new thing, Most of the Profets ordered their followers to practice the fasting.
Being a Muslim we fasting 30 days in a particular month of Islamic Year called "Ramadan".
Fasting, Philosophy:
The main philosophy of fasting is to feel the hunger of poor people when they do not find the food all the day. What they feel, Through fasting we feel their pain and be ready to help them all time.

Fasting is a prayer on religious point of view. But on other hand it is also good for better health. Fasting seems good for over eaters. Over eating injurious for the health. It causes fatness, sugar, blood pressure, and heart diseases are the result of un-care over eating. Fasting is a good source to control the over eating habit. It creates a discipline in eating routine. And gives a chance to loss the weight. Less in weight feel easy and enjoy slim and light life very easily. So the fasting helps to reduce the weight which is good for healthy life.

I do not think fasting is good for health. I've seen my mother go on fasting in different occassions to observe Hindu rituals and to the best of my knowledge, it has been proved to be harmful for her health more than the spiritual gains. I go on fasting when the Doctor advices that for a blood test.

I don't believe in fasting. If i stopped eating, even for a day, i suspect i would pass out. We need our energy and to me fasting is pointless. I'm not religious so i have no one to praise by torturing myself and even if i was i really don't think it's a great thing to do/

As far as I know, people fast chiefly because of two main reasons: Religious and Health.
I won't comment about fasting due to religious reasons since different people have their own beliefs and it wont be good to comment on that.
Now when it comes to fasting for health reasons, I would like to share my experiences. I think fasting does work! But it may not be good to fast for a whole day, it would in fact be starving rather than fasting. I have tried fasting in a manner that I cut down my diet to a bit less than what I used to eat. I took my breakfast, skipped lunch and had a moderate dinner. I continued this schedule for about 15-20 days and lost about 10 Kgs.

Hope u must be doing well
Fasting, its almost in every religion (Muslims, Christians, Jews, Hindu, Sikhism and others)and if u talk about religious point of view then fasting is not meant for Physical health only but its to see who obey the religion and who don't and its to purify ones innerself(u may call it soul) and to guide u in different angels of life.
I am Muslim and follow Religion Islam, In Islam fasts are compulsory for every Muslims who is capable to keep it, either male, female, old, young, kid etc. In Islamic Calendar, their is month of "Ramazan" Muslim keep fast in this month for 29 or 30 days (Islamic months are based on moon siting and there are 12 month and almost 355 days in Islamic calendar)
The basic concept of Fasting in Islam is not only to "Refrain from eating or drinking" but its Following Allah Order and Stop doing all acts which are even forbidden by Islam as well as Acts which are allowed in other days but have to refrain during Fasting like husband and wife cant make love during they are fasting which is allowed.
So In general fasting is for each and every part of Body, Like don't eat and drink during fasting, eyes don't see bad, things, ear don't listen bad things, tongue don't use bad words and to speak less is recommended and all of these must Worship Allah more than in normal days.
Its teaching is to follow Allah and to stop from every bad act, be very careful and while u stay hungry and thirsty so it not only give u idea of the feeling which hunger and thirst the poor or starving people can feel but also discipline ur life, so it remind u of feeling of poor and u inclined for charity and other good things. it nourishes ur innerself and ur soul get revival of teaching that every thing is for Allah and human being is in world to worship him and obey him.
during this month Charity is at its peak and u see very less fight and other problems. at the end of Ramazan, its EID a Muslim festival to celebrate the blessing of this holy month and every Muslim around the globe celebrate it
the timing of fast in Islam are from Sawn to Dusk, u stop eating, drinking when its time to sunrise and with sunset u open ur fast. and after sunset u can eat, drink till sunrise
And if u talk medical point of view then sure fasting help u to stay healthy
whole one month you stop eating from sunrise to sunset so stomach and other parts of body get rest and get refresh. it help to control
1)ur fats
2)ur blood pressure
3) ur cholesterol level
4) help u in dieting which u cant do in other days (wink)
there are lot of other benefits which u can know after thorough studies and consulting doctors, i heard many doc recommend fasting to their patients in some diseases.
I think its getting too long
here i would like you to read below discussion as well

I never fasted before because I just do not believe in it. I think it is wrong to starve yourself for so long until a certain time.
