osx 10.3.9 back up and reinstall

random freezes,spinning color wheel,slow loads on my 10.3.9 emac.I have done the disk utilities,disk warrior and machelp...things have improved a little but still exist...what i've done so far has been recommended thru various forums...i'm an illiterate (DUH!)...it looks like the last shot is a reinstall...how to ? and is there an effective way to do a back up for a novice? help !!!!!
