Inconsiderate Neighbours What can you do?

The guy in the house opposite has fitted a security light. Nothing wrong with that, except that it is like living in a floodlit arena in the street now. The light is so bright and so big it's like a searchlight, and it shine right into my front windows, making it impossible to sleep even with heavy curtains drawn. Watching tv is almost impossible as the light from over the road is blinding, and although I have asked him politely if he could either fit a lower light or angle the light down a little, I was treated to a barrage of verbal abuse.
I'm so tempted to go out there and smash the light, why is it some people are so damned inconsiderate.

I have had that happen to me only from the back but as the guy was a decent neighbour he moved the light over.
Isn't there some law here in the UK about light pollution?
I think my next step would be to write him a letter stating politely your grievance post it recorded delivery, keep a copy for your self and if there is no change I would either visit a solicitor or the Citizens Advice Bureau and see what the next step should be.
On no account get aggressive because I do not think that gets you anywhere in fact it might go the other way and go against you if it comes to court. I'm talking Small Claims Court and you could apply for Legal Aid too.
I know this sound a step which is a little drastic but it might work.
I once used this to take a guy to court because his car ran into mine and my insurance company would not pay for all my damage so I sued and got costs too.

Thanks for that. I got very little sleep again last night thanks to his stupid light. His foul-mouthed abuse when I spoke to him leads me to think that there is no reasoning with him. I guess a letter will be the next course of action, thanks.

I have written a calm, factual and well-worded letter and kept copies. I put the letter through his door over the weekend and also spoke to a couple of the other neighbours who are equally fed up. They have also complained and one of them has also put a letter through his door. I just hope he gets the message, failing that my next step will be the local authority I think.
thanks for your help

Hi I think there is one like him in every street isn't there? They think they have the right to make every other persons a misery. I have neighbours the same - I live in a flat and have downstairs neighbours who think it's fine to make a racket all day long, their kids are always screaming, they come back early in the morning shouting and yelling, but if I should make one noise like accidentally dropping something on the floor then I they start banging on their ceiling! Not sure what you can do about yours have you spoke to the local council, surely their is something they can do about it!

I have been in touch with the local authority, there seems little they can do however, as he is within his rights to have this *floodlight* on the front of his property. However, one of my other neighbours has also complained and we are trying to work together to get something done

You can post your case online at bidsfromlawyers.com, see if there's any legal action that could be done about this. Sometimes these things could be resolved by just talking it over with a mediator in between, so at least you have an impartial witness.
