How many people are allergic to penicillin?

I used to get strep throat a lot when I was younger. My MD says that I'm allergic to it now because my system grew an immunity to it. He says that it's normal and that a lot of people are allergic to it. So, how many of you are allergic to penicillin? What happens/how do you react? Any bad experiences?

I had Broncitis on a regular basis when I was younger. The doctors missed the fact that I had asthma which caused the broncitis. I would always be given penicillin and now it doesn't do me any good to take it because it either does nothing or makes my symptoms worse. I do believe that you can become ammune to anything that you take on a regular basis. I know that this also happens with pain medication.

That's what I think, because I had strep so often and given penicillin, that I body just decided that it didn't want anymore. I haven't tried any since I've gotten older, but why chance it with all the other stuff that's out there these days?

Well, I was waiting for more responses before I selected 'my best response' to give others a fair shot, but no one else responded, so you left me no options................to pick the one already listed. Now that I picked on, I'm sure that others will respond. It always seems to happen that way. OH, I'm not saying that I don't like the response that I chose either...........it just seemed weird for me to chose one with barely any responses, that's all!!!

I'm not but my neice is. We had found out when she was a baby and then she'd gotten sick again. The doctor wanted to put her on it but we argued she was allergic. He said no she's not, a little rash is a side effect. So foolish us we trusted his judgement. Within two days my poor neice broke out in blisters all over her private area. We ripped the doctor a new one and made sure everyone in his waiting area heard us. That taught us right then and there not to believe doctors just because they are doctors. You know yourself better then them.

WOW! That must have been a painful, horrible event. I hope she was young enough to forget about it.

Come one, I know that there must be more of you allergic to penicillin than the few that have actually responded. Don't be scared, tell us about it, please?

I am allergic to pcn too. To be honest I am not sure why, but when I was a child I had some reactions to it and was told to never take it. I had strep about 2 years ago. It was the worst pain I ever felt. It felt like razor blades. The Doc gave me a scripy for Z-pac. Can't recall now exactly what was in it, but it was a I believe a three day dosing. It took longer than 3 days to go away, but I felt soo much better even after thr first dose.

When they realized I was having the allergic reaction to PCN, they put me on amoxicillin (sp?) and it did the trick. But I haven't had strep since then (I'm knocking on wood right now - hehehe).

Im allergic to it. I got my wisdom teeth pulled a few years ago and I got a dry socket from it and my dentist gave me penicillin. I took one pill at night when it was really bad and I fell asleep and woke up around 3am and couldnt breathe. MY throat swelled up and I couldnt swallow and could hardly talk. My mom didnt believe me that something was wrong and told me to suck it up and go back to bed but then after bugging her for a few minutes she drove me to the hospital and by the time we got there I was spitting up blood. They made me wait over an hour till someone even came in to see me! Then they gave me a shot in my hip of something and made me wait anohter hour or 2 and once the swelling of my throat started to go down they sent me home. My dad was allergic to it and they gave him a card to carry with him just in case something happend where he might need it and he couldnt tell them that way they could find the card to know but I dont know if they stil ldo that cause they didnt give me anything to carry with me to say Im allergic so hopefully nothing happens where I cant talk and someone trys to give me that, I wrote it on the back of my license but I dont know how well that will help.
