Are shock collars for your dog inhumane?  email this discussion to a friend?

I've been having this debate with my husband lately. We have a black lab that is 10 months old and behaves like a bologna head. He's seriously just a big boob at times but he's still a pup even though he's very large. He's very gentle and loving but it's like he doesn't know his own strength and can't control himself. For example, he will jump on people when they come in the front door. This drives my husband crazy and he wants to get a shock collar to teach him not to do this. I think this is inhumane. I couldn't imagine shocking my dog. I bought him a choke chain and I hold him when someone comes in the door, if he jumps up then I give his chain a tug and he sits down. He's learning but my hubby thinks he's not getting it fast enough and wants this shock collar. I have a friend who tells me that he used it for his dog and it worked great. I'm disgusted with my friend because of that. Has anyone used a shock collar? What do you think of these collars, are they inhumane? I think they hurt the animal and shouldn't be used.

To me, it depends on how it is used. If it is put on and left on then that is cruel. If you use it as a training aid and teach your dog with verbal commands along with the shock collar, then it is a training aid. You dog will learn to associated the bark with the collar and your command (for instance, NO!). It usually doesn't take them long to catch on...a day, maybe two. Most of the collars are adjustable too, so you can set the amount of shock to minimal.

Leaving it on all the time would be cruel. The one my husband wants to get has a button control that you push when the dog does something wrong. It seems lazy of the owner.

some dogs are harder to keep under control than others. i don't think its inhumane at all. If you use it on the dog for a while, they will learn not to do certain things. They are animals, not people. There is a huge difference, and if you don't train him, he will not know any better, and will continue to be the way he is.

I am training him and he's come a long way so far with his behavior and I have not used a shock collar. I think they are cruel, zapping my pooch would make me feel horrible.

Please people not shock collars... tell me if it was your child not able to pick up a math problem or memorize a poem or something like that, would you beat him up, would you put a shock collar on him.... there are various ways to learn and teach things... well all it takes is a bit more time...AND IF YOU THINK YOU DESERVE A PET, THEN YOU SHOULD SPARE THAT TIME FOR HIM...
shock collars are utter violence, inhuman...and not something i would suggest....

Well said. I'm going to have my husband read these posts. Hopefully he'll change his mind.

I saw a video contest on Funniest Home Videos where a twenty year old guy had a shock collar around his neck and they started with the lowest voltage and ended with the highest level. This was intended to show how dangerous they are rather than to be funny. If your husband could see this clip, I think he would change his mind. It was awful to see what this type of collar can do to a 180 pound human. I have a yellow lab and she was the same way when she was a puppy. That is in their genes. You just have to consistently do what you're doing and give him the same command word each time. Labs are quite intelligent, but they act like puppies for three years. After that, they start to settle down. Please tell your husband to have more patience. It breaks my heart to think that another shock collar may be purchased to make the inventor of it rich.

I saw that episode of AMV and my husband saw it too. He laughed at it. Did you see that the guy won for that clip? Anyways, you make a great point. It's cruel, we need to be patient with our pets just like we are our children. I think they are dangerous.

i agree with you. i wish those collars would be outlawed.
he is still a pup, he is going to need more training time. if the puppy is worked with on a constant basis he will learn not to jump and he will be more calm.

I am the one who works with him. When we first got him, my husband told me that is was "his dog" and he would be the one to take care of him and train him. Yeah right. The dog has become my shadow and I do everything for him, including the disipline/training. I think John is looking for an easy way to train him but I don't think the shock collar is the way.

well a shock collar is used for extremely aggressive dog behavior like chasing cars. but with your dog, i guess he is just overly friendly. as long as he is not aggressive then i think he can be trained, the shock collar is a little harsh considering that he is just a puppy, try to read books on puppy training or seek professional help.

Thanks hellboi. He's not aggressive at all. He's just playful and happy. He doesn't need the collar but I can't seem to get that through my husbands head.

I was going to try these with my dogs but I started to think it was inhumane to use them. I dont want to cause my pet any kind of pain no matter if if she barks all night I still wont use that device on my pets.

I have never heard of a shock collar, but just by the sounds of it, I am disgusted, it sounds like the lazy way out of training an animal. Spend the time to teach the animal in a humane manner.

myLot reputation of 92/100. mamashane (541)   ranked 1,133 out of 7,859 in dogs  6 years ago

I've never seen one close up but from what I understand, it is a collar you put on your dog and when the dog does something it's not supposed to do, you push a button and the collar sends a shock to the dog. It's very inhumane and I can't believe that they haven't been banned.

Oh yes when the dogs are still puppies they really do not know their own strength, it is inhumane to get a shock collar for your dog though, you both have to teach the dog not to jump on people, and I did read here that you are doing it right the way you are teaching your dog. No I have never used a shock collar and never would this is so cruel, and they should be banned.

I think that you are doing fine training the dog. It just takes time.
I do know someone who has used a shock collar on her dog. As much as I hate the idea, it did work. Her adult dog kept digging his way out from under the fence and heading out onto the road. This was something that needed to be handled quickly for the animal's own protection.

chixiethepixie (10)   ranked 7,640 out of 7,859 in dogs  6 years ago

It will simply take time to train the dog-as you said they arent very old and certain types of dogs do take longer to grow up and behave-we have a border collie crossed with a labrador and she is almost 3 but she stillacts like a puppy and our vet said that this is due to the labrador in her as they are slow to grow up

Personally i would never use a shock collar on a dog but at the end of the day if it is ruining your life then something needs to be done-
