Setzer Jazzing It  

Yes, I can play some Setzer stuff, played on a lot of rockabilly bands & we often did one or 2 of his numbers.

That was really great listening to it in the morning, what a awesome Setzer is, i´m becoming his fan and have to det me that DVD. When i see him playing these wonderful speedy lines i think i never would be able to close to it. My attack hand is not that strong´, my fretting hand works much better. I allways having problems in syncronisation of both when it get´s to faster playing. How do you practise that? do have a good hint for me. What i really like in Setzer´s playing is that his fast lines are so nice in melody it´s not just the fast playing effect. Would be glad to just come a little close to it... lol Great video jay love it also that mellow song is so wonderful, he plays that marvelous.

the thing that amazes me with all his phrases & riffs, he isn't even looking at the guitar half the time, he's busy bouncing about the stage & making gestures to the audience.

As for playing that kinda stuff, I'm not even close. He is really accurate & precise with his flat picking. I tend to lose it after a while. The only way to learn that kinda stuff is to practise lots of flat picking pieces.

There's a really good computer program called guitar pro that you can load tabs in, I use that a lot to practise my stuff.

Hi jay thanks. i will have a look on this site, about the stage acting of Setzer i totaly agree. I´m really hungry for some new material to practise on.

Guitar pro isn't free, but as a tuition tool it's worth every penny, you see the tab on screen, you can loop sections to work on them etc, & set it to speed up each loop

Sorry Jay i´m a little lazy responsing today, yes i saw it but i think it´s worth the price. Also if you pay you will use it, we don´t have to get all for free, the money for this software is ok for my opinion.

ps. What about Mike Stern do you like his playing???

Re Guitar Pro, you can download the demo I think, try before you buy which is good.

As for Mike Stern, I know his name but can't recall any tracks by him, there's so many to remember.

Yes jay i just saw that you can download a demo, i try it out tomorrow as i´m some kind of to lazy for getting in to it right now, i give you a note about what it think on it after i had a try on it.

Yes your right about remembering there´s really such an amount to listen to. To me Mike Stern is a great player i have some lead sheets of his music which was into jazz rock and played it 4 years ago in a group. So we took the main song and played them in our on style that was great, also i learned a lot about some harmonys, i knew them befor but not in the kind of way he connected them. He also played in the Miles Davis group in the 80´s. Maybe there are some videos on youtube have to see for that.

Absolutely, I'll look around youtube for him for sure. Let me know when you get Guitar Pro, I got a tab of sleepwalk, by Setzer for it. That should keep you busy for a few hours :)

Oh yeah... you´re probable right about playing it in that way he does it.

I down loaded the Guitar pro today and it said only for 15 days well ok but the thing is i see the note/tabs page and you can click to see even the fretboard. So when i press play the line runs throuh the note bars but nothing to hear. Do you know what´s wrong???

Goto preferences, & select sounds options, there;s a midi setting somewhere to select what you want to use, that's probably it

Nothing to hear i just read on the front page that in this demo version RSE is disabled, what does that mean???

RSE is the REAL Sound Engine, that's different to midi, so you need to make sure you have your midi sound settings correct in preferences.

I know it doesn't sound great the sound, but that's because it's midi, but you get to hear the nots & see them. Which makes learning tabs way easier to follow

It´s good i have a little practise on them the next 14 days i can keep it. What´s with the RSE? can you hear then a real guitar.

RSE is a more realistic sound engine, it takes a more powerful pc to run, but much better.

Cool i just listend it, that´s great having the notes i played it sometime ago will practise that tune. It´s such a lovley one, isn´t it played also in the movie Back To The Future with Michael J. No, Michael J Fox did Johnny B Goode on Back To The Future. That's sleepwalk, same as the video somewhere on this thread :P

Yes Johnny Be Good is played in that movie, but i sure think also that Sleppwalk tune is played when his parents dance together. Next time i see that movie i have a look on it if i´m right or some kind of blinded.. lol

You really got me into Setzer the more i hear the more i enjoy his music he´s also great entertaining to say. Also like his guitar sound though it´s different to mine, i know i will get on practise in that style of music. I remember back when i started i learned a lot of rock&roll changes, riffs & pentatonic style licks.
That´s great when the ladys come out to dance & sing by his side what a wonderful music this is, it´s awesome you get a real joyful positiv feeling on it, as he said it´s time to rock...

I like that Drive Like lightening, cos the guitar scales sound really exotic, almost Egyptian or something. Then at the same time, sounds like dick Dale surf with the really fast pick work. Yet his does it while jumping about. Most frustrating seeing it made to look so easy.

Incidentally, the blonde lady on stage is his wife :)

I listen to the solo again and i think he mixes in some harmonic minor scale notes to get that sounding. I will try out tomorrow on that melody his playing to catch up better

About the easyness of his acting while playing yeah.. that´s really true. I´m a big fan of Weather Report from the 70´s and i saw a concert on tv long ago and Jaco Pastorius plays the bass and when you see him playing that stuff he does it´s really amazing, he was like a maniac but the sad thing is he got to crazy weird in his personal life so he doesn´t share his music anymore to the people, that´s real tragedy.

Peter Green went the same way, from Fleetwood Mac I believe, he grew his nails really long so he was unable too play for many years.

Yes right said, i haven´t listen to Peter Green for a longer time also didn´t hear something on him, i like the old Fleetwood songs. My girlfried prefers more the time with Stevie Nicks from the mid 70´s. I know she has a solo record from Green that is great but can´t remember the name have to look that up.

Hi Jay it´s early in the morning and i´m just listening on your links, great stuff again. The Dirty Boogie is cool i like that brass sound behind. I maybe be on weekend in our next bigger town würzburg and see to get that DVD. As i said befor Jay it´s fantastic listening to that style in music after you just got up.

ps. i saw another vid "Setzer´s guitar lesson" that´s so marvelous seeing him on the guitar and no band behind him. I also reconizied how he switches between finger picking & flatpick that´s amazing how he does that, i tryed... man that´s not easy but it looks so easly as you see him doing it.

I actually use that technique of switching between pick work & finger picking like Setzer, it really opens up your options when doing solo's. Takes a little getting used to though

Exactly, another thing i just saw that you can slow down the tempo that´s great, well i have 12 days time to practise it..lol then i have to buy.

Not only can you slow it down, but you can loop it, & set it to gain tempo on each loop.

As for the tabs, when you purchase it, you sometimes have a download of free tabs when you log into the customer area. Plus there's quite a few user forums to download & request tabs. I have loads of tabs, a few thousand for you :)

I´m thinking on to buy this thing it´s pretty cheap in my opinion 60€. Ok i´m just over the first 8 bars on tempo 60bpm.

I'm glad you like it, I've been using it a couple of years now, I'm sure I'll have plenty of tabs you'll like.

Yes, that's always a pain finding somewhere to rehearse, I could never find drummers I could get along with either. Serious ego's & not willing to play what was needed.

Yes i understand, well the thing is my old drumer mate phoned me and said he wanted to do something (we have been playing together some years earlier) so i called up my brother who i told you plays bass and is in a cover band to get our bums up and have another try on something new.

Yes, get it on, a jam is great fun to bring new ideas.

Yeah.. that´s it, i´m seeing to meet as maybe 2-3 times befor going to that studio recording day i got for free to just record session stuff and get forth from working on them ideas we play on that day, could be work out good i think.

It'll get your creative juices flowing & it's just good working with other musicians. I find I stagnate just jamming by myself.

Yes that´s exactly the point as i also have this small project with that older friend of mine, but he´s not a jammer and we play with a drum machine and that sucks in time. I let you know how it´s working out because this week i will know more my self, well i´m sure i find a place to jam a litte then. If it get´s started and the recording is successful i send you over some stuff from it ok.

OUT STANDING!!! what a great scence going on there, i didn´t exspect that to happen suddenly Eddie on stage and all the other well know names. I just can say i enjoyed it to the bones, i had to watch it a 2nd time, great. That must have been a hell of a fun being in that concert.

I was blown away when I first saw it, it's a shame the audio is out of sync with the video. What a historic moment for guitarists, I defy anyone to say Setzer isn't a respected guitarist after that

Sorry Jay needed my bed... after 10 minutes of posting the last comment but right after geting up i had a listen to it. It sounds somehow very traditional, nice tune it´s familiar to me i think i heard it befor. Setzer is pretty young age, in what time are these videos made?

Yes, you're right, it was Duke Ellington, I always relate it to Louis Prima as that tends to be the version most people I know prefer. Sam Buttera plays Sax on it & he is a long time fav of my as well.
