When my son "graduated" from preschool, they held a ceremony where the children had to be dressed in caps and gowns, invitations were sent out, etc. It was very much like my highschool graduation, except the graduates were 4 and 5 yrs. old. I enjoyed the ceremony, I was very proud of how well my son did his part, and that he behaved so well with all the excitement going on. Some parents were upset because of the cost of the caps, gowns, tassles, etc. I think they could have had a nice party where they handed out little diplomas or certificates, and the children could be in there dress clothes and that would have been fine also. I did not care either way, but some parents had a fit and insisted on the big graduation ceremony. They were handing out bunches of roses to their kids when it was over, and relatives were handing out the graduation cards with money in them, just like a highschool graduation. In my opinion alot of it was for the benefit of the parents to show off. I think since some parents were strapped for cash, that a nice party for the kids would have been enough. So was the graduation for the kids or parents? I'm still trying to figure this one out.

my husband's family owns a small school. and ever since i can remember, they've always had separate graduation rites for the pre-school. what they do to cut down on costs was to rent out the togas and caps for a minimal fee (below $5). when these are returned, a portion of the fee is returned to them. the school is very much aware of the financial capability of the parents that's why they do it in as little fanfare as possible. in a way, it's for the parents because we'd feel so proud looking at our little ones in the gowns, walking down the aisle and recieving awards or medals or ribbons. and on the other hand, i feel it's for the kids, too, coz judging by my 4 yr-old's reactions, she gets so excited when graduation comes. she loves to dress up in the toga and the hat. the pictures would mean a lot to them, too, when they're grown, don't you think?

The renting of the caps and gowns would have been nice. I did enjoy the graduation, I just felt bad for some of the kids who did not participate because their family's didn't have the money to buy the graduation stuff. I think some of the parents were embarrassed because they didn't have the money, so the kids missed out on the party because the parents didn't sign them up for it.

Oh my gosh your sonk looked adorable in his cap and gown. At the preschool near us when the kids graduate the teacher just cuts out lengths of black material and cuts a hole out for the head and drapes it over the kids and ties it around the waist with a belt. Then she makes hats for them from styrofoam plates and construction paper. It looks really cute and doesnt cost the parents anything. It is always and adorable ceremony that the children perform and then at the end they are given a diploma and a hug from their teacher.
