What's the difference between "Rap"and "Hiphop" music?

Hiphop has many different blends of music to it, rap, funk, jazz, etc. Rap is an extension of hip hop as it is today. Rap is alot about the lyrics while hiphop is about the music.

this is what i know,, i'm not a music expert or anything,, but i believe that under rap is under the category of hiphop,, rap pertains to the lyrics being said fast but with beat and tempo,, and hiphop is more of a genre,, please correct me if i'm wrong,,:-)

rap music is the whole "this is the truth I know" without the poppy beats or rnb hooks. this is all about the rapper and his truth. Rap music vs hiphop is what emo is to rock.

hiphop music isn't just centered on the rapper. the whole community: the graffiti artist, the breakdancer, the dj, the gangsta should be able to express themselves in this music.

in some way they are the same. hip-hop is a type of culture. rap is a type of music from that culture.

In my opinon hip-hop is not a culture it's part of the urban culture. Hip-hop is like rap, but rap is just a very similar version. It's hard to put in words but hip-hop is someone like Run DMC, or Beastie boys. And rap is more like eminem, mos def, method man, big pun, etc.

Rap basically originated with cultural icons such as Muhammad Ali, James Brown, and the Last Poets. It's a method of inventing a clever way of wordplay in a informal manner with the spoken word. Today we know of rap as a music form with revenues in the billions of dollars. Hip-Hop is a lifestyle and cultural movement which started in New York's boros in the 70s as a non-violent way for the various gangs and youths to express themselves among their peers and community at large. Today we confuse it as a music form, when it reality it is a mindstate and a means of expressing that mindstate outwardly.

Rap is more about the lyrics, Hip Hop is more about the beats then the lyrics. For all of you that think rap comes from hip hop, you are wrong. Hip Hop came from Rap. Rap started in the late 70's. Hip Hop which is an extension of Rap Music, started in the late 80's and early 90's. Hip Hop music uses, rock, r&b, pop, and other beats. That is the difference between the 2.

hip-hop pertains to the culture while rap is its music. hip-hop has four elements. these elements are b-boying, dj-ing, grafitti, and rap.

rap is more concentrated in the lyrics, you know, the flow of the rhymes and the timing and freestyle stuff, while hip hop is more concentrated on the beat.
