I had 13 hour-long lessons, one a week (so about 3 months I guess). I also did some extra driving with my parents or anyone else willing to take me in that time.
I passed first time without many problems but extra practice might have helped my nerves a bit - my legs were shaking during my test!

It took me about six months having only one 1-hour lesson each week. I could have probably done it faster, but I was paying for everything myself from my saturday job (was still in high school).
I failed the driving test first time, but didn't take anymore lessons. My parents insured me for my mothers car and I practised whenever I could in that. About a month after failing the first test, I took it again and passed.
Practice is the key. Learn from a proper instructor, then get someone to accompany you so you can practice. The extra experience will build your confidence.

I do believe practise makes perfect (or at least you get your confident to drive around alone after driving for hours). There is no telling how much one person should take lesson before they go for the driving test or how long should one person learn to drive before they are ready to take the driving test.
Since I couldn't exchange my licence in the UK, so I had to take 5 hours lessons before I took the test and passed. It took me a month from taking the lesson to the test, because I spread the lesson to 1-2 hour(s) perweek only (that 5 hours was including 2 hours for me using the instructor car on the day where I took the test).

I think I had about 6 months worth of lessons when I was learning to drive. I know that I had about 40 lessons, it might have been a few less. I passed first time which I couldn't believe. I don't think you really 'learn' how to drive until you've passed your test and go out on the road alone, then the learning experience really begins! Good luck with the lessons!
