I started getting fever blisters/cold sores when I was in my 30s. I don't know how I picked up the virus, but in any case, I can tell you I was not pleased. Now every time I run a fever, get a sunburn, burn my mouth, get too stressed, or eat too much of the wrong foods, I get that familiar little tingle in the same spot on my lower lip and I know it's coming. Well, I hated these things so much that I've tried everything. I got a prescription for my doctor, but I have actually found something that works even better and it's FREE. When I start to feel that tingle, I get an ice cube and wrap half of it in a paper towel to absorb the ice as it melts and to give me something to hang on to. I hold the exposed part of the ice directly on the tingly part of my lip. I hold it there until the ice is gone. It will actually make the tingling worse for a few minutes. You'll feel that little virus freaking out. After a few minutes, it will go away. If you feel the tingle come back, do another ice cube. You might only have to do it once, or you might have to do it several times, but if you keep it up every time you feel the tingle, the cold sore will not appear. If it does appear, it will be a wimpy little nothing that goes away almost immediately. I never get those raging, icky monsters any more. I haven't filled my prescription in several years. Hope this helps someone.

Oooh, I hope it works!! i'll have to give it a try next time one of the pesky little critters decides to camp on my face. I usually use a cream called Zovirax that you get over the counter in the chemist - but as the ice is free - its worth a try. I've seen these new patches that you place on top of the coldsore, has anyone tried these?? i think they are a bit expensive though. I've had coldsores since i was a little kid - they usually turn up in bright sunshine, really cold weather, when i get stressed or have a cold. I HATE THEM!!!!

I'm with you! I haven't tried the patch, but it sounds like a good idea. Creams and ointments don't last long enough. I hope the ice will work for you as well as it does for me. Thanks for your comment.

I've been getting cold sores since I was a small child. They are so annoying and embarrassing too. Thanks for the tip, I will try it. I've been using Carmex for a long time, it doesn't make it go away completely but it helps the healing.

Thanks for the great tip. My hubby gets cold sores occasionally and they seem to take forever to go away. I'll have him try the ice next time he feels one coming on.
