We have a dashaund, he is great with the kids, and he follows them around, when it's time for bed he crawls up with them and sleeps under the covers. He has a great temperment, he doesnt bark all the time, house training was very easy for him.

Pugs are good dogs for kids. They don't get too big, they love to cuddle, they like to play but aren't too rough. They sleep a lot and don't bark much. They're really cute dogs.

Get a mutt from the pound. They are usually smarter and have fewer health problems. If you do decide on a purebred, do a lot of research first. For example, although both daschunds and pugs are wonderful breeds, pugs are prone to problems with their soft palate which leads to breathing issues and asthma, daschunds are prone to back problems, and both breeds are prone to obesity if not few a carefully regulated diet. Every purebred dog has its little negatives which are almost always far outweighed by positives. Just make sure you are informed so you can make the best choice possible for you and your daughter.
