Stamp collectors.....where do you get new material for your collection? |
|
Hello Everyone......
Do you actively seek new material for your collection? What outlets have you found for adding items to your collection?
Does having a bunch of stamps make you a collector? If they just sit in a box, untouched, unseen, is it really a collection or is it just a box with a few stamps?
Collections are developed, created, cared for, added to, shared, arranged and re-arranged, studied, added to, and enjoyed.
Are you a collector or just someone with a few stamps in a box?
Which would you like to be?

I also, believe you are a collector.
Collectors spend time enjoying their collection, we study them, we are happy and proud to show them to anyone. We try to help and encourage others to begin collecting.

nrnotrare (417) | 3 years ago | Hello.....
Many people, myself include, enjoy collecting used stamps because they are more affordable. A lot of collectors believe that stamps were created for a reason....to carry mail.....an un-used stamp is waiting to complete it's mission. Some people only collect used stamps.

nrnotrare (417) | 3 years ago | Hello....
You don't mention the ages of your children but, just about everything you can think of has been pictured on world wide stamps, finding subjects of interest should not be difficult. Most collectors enjoy the wide variety of items, people, places, and subjects pictured on stamps. The style and colors of the newer stamps may be the ones that initially attract your children to the hobby.
There are a number of options for storing a collection, www.whitmanbooks.com carries a variety of albums from beginners to advanced. Hinges (small gummed glassine papers) are the most common item used for mounting. Starting with a "family" album is common, adding albums for individuals as they show greater interest. If the youngsters see you working on and enjoying the hobby they may develop a real interest. I am willing to help. Learning is easy. I began at about age six or seven with the help of my older brother, I have now been collecting over 48 years, and I am still fascinated by it.
There are certainly fewer collectors now than there were when I began and we oldtimers are on a mission to try to reverse this trend by helping and encouraging anyone who who shows an interest. In my other discussions, I have an offer of free stamps to any/all collectors in mylot, all I ask is a request in writing with good condition new stamps on your envelope. I will pay return postage, just send an email for my address.

4. dragonstar13 (1211) | 3 years ago | For years I collected stamps and stuck them in a boxes and envelopes. I did not seek out specific stamps, just saved the ones that caught my eye. I consider myself a passive collector, but a collector all the same. From time to time I would take them out and enjoy them. Right now I am learning about sorting and displaying stamps and working on putting them in stock pages until time and finances allow me to put them into albums.

Stashing stamps and making plans for them pretty much makes you a collector. To get a look at some albums check this site: www.whitmanbooks.com

If I can help in any way, let me know.

6. RealIolo (756) | 3 years ago | About 99.5% of the time, the post office is my source. I would consider buying more stuff from other sources but the "finance committee" object to expenditures on stamps. I am lucky if I can get the latest stuff the post office is releasing a lot of the time.

8. ccatherine (295) | 3 years ago | My parents used to collect stamps and I always knew about it, when I started to collect postcards I thought "Stamps are so beautiful!" and I was like: let's continue my parents'collection, I started to trade with many people, I don't usually buy them but now I've a little collection that I just love. Some of them I remember when I've received and I love to study them and see those beautiful drawings so I think I'm a collector even if I don't have much time to this hobby.

mic_tcs (188) | 3 years ago | Hello ccatherine,
It is so nice to have parents who used to collect stamps as you can have your parents old and antique collection. For me I prefer old stamps as they are more valuable and rare. But since I am the only one who collect stamps in my family, I can only buy the old stamps or exchange with friends. I really agree with you that "Stamps are so beautiful!". Hopefully both of us will continue to collect stamps forever.:)

9. mic_tcs (188) | 3 years ago | Hello there,
For me, I start collecting stamps since my primary school. I used to exchange stamps with friends and relatives. In secondary school, I bought the stamps from post office. Sometimes I would also buy from stamp exhibitions. Now in university, most of the time I buy from ebay. Until now I got lots of stamps(uncountable). Some is nicely sorted, but some are left in packets as I don't have much time to sort it out. I am a serious collector. This is the only hobby that I really put my time and heart into it. I just love to see the beautiful stamps.

Many collectors have the same problem of finding the time to enjoy their collections. They also gather items wherever they can find it so they will have material to work on when they do find the time. Life often demands most of our time to content with everyday problems. It can be a real pleasure to get lost in our collections and imagination to relieve the stress built up by our job and life in general.
You would be surprised at how much you can accomplish by devoting a few hours a week to your collection. Not only do you get the stress reducing benefit, but by the end of the month you can see improvements in your collection.
In my other discussions you will find an offer of free stamps. I am trying to collect an item of regular mail from as many countries as possible, and I would very much like to have something from Malaysia. Let me know if you are interested.

| 10. white_tiger (43) | 3 years ago | i have been collecting stamps for almost 20 years, i started when i was 7! i source stamps for my collection from various places - i originally started by raiding my dad's collection of letters from his family in Italy and Switzerland, then i started buying "Mission Mixes" from wherever sold them. i also had several friends at school who gave me unwanted family collections, so i guess i've been pretty lucky. i also trade them with some collectors via penpalling, and more recently i have bought some off ebay as i have found some relatively cheap lots and the postage is cheap because they are small:) now i have 'trained' the secretary at work to save all envelopes with stamps on them for me:)
with the time and effort that i have put into stamps in the past, by your description i am certainly a collector:)

nrnotrare (417) | 3 years ago | Hello white_tiger....
You most definately sound like an avid collector. I began my first collection at about the same age and have now been at it a little more than 48 years and I'm still having a great time.
Would you like some free stamps to add to your collection?? Check my other discussions and you will see my offer to any collector in mylot. All I ask is that you send a request by regular mail. I'm trying to collect an item of mail from all the countries involved with mylot and something from each of my mylot friends. Would you be interested in creating a collecting like this starting with some items from the US?
I have sent a request for you to add me to your friends list so I can send you my address. Please let me know what you think of this idea.
