Why don't you know what you have???

There's the saying "You don't know what you have until it's gone" and probably everyone knows this already. What bothers me is even if this is a well-known fact, people still tend to take no heed of it. For some reason they turn a blind eye towards this and continue on with their busy lives not realizing that they're slowly losing the things (or worse, people) that are most important to them.
Why are people like this? It's so sad to see and hear stories of regret. Why can't they just wake up and see what they have now? Why do they have to wait 'til it's gone to realize the importance? Is it because they're too caught up in their own worlds? Or is it because they are just too insensitive? Or is it because they think that there is no end? Do share your thoughts.

I think the answer to this question is encased in the question itself. Because quite literally, they "don't know what they've got." People take things for granted--especially the people in their lives. They go through looking for the next thing--whatever that thing is, without being content with what is already there. Quite sad. People just believe you're always going to be there for them regardless of how they treat you. It comes as quite the shock when you aren't, I assure you.

Sigh... I know my friend... It's just so sad. =( regret can be such a bitter pill to swallow.
