Do Ants Smell?

I would say they can smell. I have put food on the ground and seen ants come right over to it. The ants were 3 feet or so fom the food, I do not think they can see all that well, so they must smell.

I don't think you can smell them just like that but if you catch one and squeeze it, it does smell and if you eat an ant, they taste sour. Yes, I've eaten ants before. lol

I never thought about it and I have a pretty good sense of smell, we get an odd 3 or 4 in the house most years but a couple of years ago I went upstairs and there were hundreds in my bedroom under the window, I didn't know what to do as I hated the thought of them getting in my bed to I vacuumed them up lol, it was a bag type at the time and Input the bag in the bin, I must have done a good job because there were none in the bed, I didn't smell them though, xx

I guess I have never thought about the fact that they might have an odor. I will have to pay closer attention next time I am around ants to see if I smell them. They sure seem to have a keen sense of smell. If I so much as drop a crumb on the floor and don´t pick it right up, they seem to materialize out of nowhere to eat the crumb. They have to have come from outside because they weren´t inside before I dropped the crumb. I have to admit that I must not have a very keen sense of smell because I have never smelled them or if I did, I didn´t realize it. This is a very interesting subject to me.

I have had those teeny tiny ants in my house before and if you squish it with your finger... the smell will be on your finger. They really do have a smell. It's a really weird smell... it almost smells like a chemical of some sort. Maybe it's how they make their invisible trail.... you know how they get back to their nest. I have learned a lot since I had a problem with them. If you see ants in your house watch them.... you will see as a rule they follow a line or trail when they follow each other. Follow the trail to the end and you will see where they are coming in at!

So maybe that smell is how they make sure they know where they're going.
