Why did Speed never think to check for Spritle?!

Ok...I loved this show. Even as a child, tho, I always wondered why Speed never thought to look in the trunk for Spritle and Chim-Chim! I mean, they were ALWAYS there! It's like knowing Kenny is gonna get killed on South Park! Anyone else a fan?
