Hitchhiker's guide books and movie

So who's read the books? It's one of my favorite series ever, one I can read over and over again and keep laughing. I love the writing technique, and how later books explain little things from the first one (like finding out what was with the pot of pansies appearing and thinking "Oh no, not again!"). Have you seen the movie? How do you think it compares to the first book? The only part that REALLY bothered me about the movie was how they did Zaphod's second head- I thought with modern technologies they could have done a much better interpretation of it.

I can proudly say I read all the Hitchhiker books as early as jr. high and I have the scars to prove it. ;) I didn't like the move the first time, but it has it's redeeming qualities and I love Zooey Deschanel. I thought the Zaphod's head thing was part cop-out and part "let's mess with the fans". Everyone who read the books was probably like, "Where's his other head and arm?" when he first appeared on screen and it was funny the way they introduced the other head. But the "surgery" that he went through to separate the brains into two heads was developed for the movie, right? In the book, it was natural that he had two heads. The pansies! lol!

That's exactly what I thought when I saw it! I was really confused at first and was like, "Huh? Where's the other head? Isn't he supposed to have another arm to grope Trillian with?"

I love Hitchhiker's Guide! My theatre company is currently putting together a production of the original BBC radio dramas (which Douglas Adams actually wrote before he wrote the first book). This is actually part two--the entire radio play is almost 6 hours long, so we had to cut it a bit and break it up into two sections. It was a lot of fun last year. The radio drama basically encompasses the first book. By the time he wrote the book version, certain little things had changed or been added (there's no towel in the radio drama!), but the story is essentially the same. As for the movie, Mos Def was great, Alan Rickman was great, and I agree--what was up with Zaphod's head?!?!?

The radio dramas are awesome! I like the towel bits- my husband is working on the series now, I think he's just started the third book, and he keeps asking me to explain what's with the towel... I'm sort of hoping they continue making the movies, they just better stay true to the story now that Douglas Adams is no longer around :( The movie was fun, and I also like that it's introducing the story/author to a whole new generation who never would have read the books if they hadn't seen the movie!

I have read the first four books. I have book number six at home, but I need to get book number five. I looked at Border's last week but they didn't have it. I may just get it from the library. I saw the movie and I really didn't like it. I think they could have done much better.

Um. There were only five novels written. I know there was a short story called Young Zaphod Plays It Safe, but that's only available in The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide Omnibus edition.

I loved the five novels and own the BBC miniseries based on the first two books (H2G2 and The Restaurant at the End of the Universe), but I'm too much of a purist to see the 2005 film. I'm not sure how much input Douglas Adams actually had in the creation of the script, but to me the idea of so many drastic changes to Hitchhiker's Guide is a bit offputting.

The Hitchhiker's Guide series are literally my favorite series of books in the world! Not only have I read them all over more than once or twice, but I have also heard the original radio plays and I have a copy of the British television series that was based off of the novels. I have never seen the movie, though. I truly didn't think much of what I saw of the previews for it, but I am willing to give it a try. I just haven't had the chance to see it yet. Anyway, Douglas Adams is by far my favorite author in the universe! If you like his writing, you might try Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. Pratchett does for fantasy what Adams did for sci-fi. They're both very comedic writers! ^_^

Honestly I have not read the books nor have I seen the movie. I have a question for you though ... do you think the bablefish translation service took their name from the Hitchhiker's Guide or do you think that it came from the biblical story of the languages being confounded in Babel? I ask cause I believe it is the second but someone I know said it is the first. Sorry to interupt the conversation.
