I sell antiques and collectibles, books, linenes and jewelry at flea markets, antique and collectible shows throughout the year. I am gearing up for the spring season and would like opinions please.

I have a basic inventory that includes antique and collectible glass items, primitives, books, linens and jewelry. I always try to supplement my inventory with some new items (that I purchase wholesale) at reasonable pricing structures so that I have a well rounded booth. We are considering some items for the new merchandise and I would like to ask your opinions of what you feel would attract you to our booth if you were to go to that market.

1. new small home decor items - roosters, americana, apples, etc. In wood and metal. These items would range from 2.00 and up to a max of about 10.00.

2. reproduction itmes - items that look antique but are made by a new company so that the pricing can be lower. Some people refer to items such as I am looking at as Country decor. Most I can get to where I can start selling prices around 5.00 and then go up from there.

3. laser cut crystals, fiber optic items and gadgets - these have light up bases or light up themselves. Small lasers would have to sell for at least 12.00 (including the base with the laser) then go up from there.

4. craft items - handmade crocheted items such as baby blankets, potholders, towel angels, etc. which I have a wholesale outlet available to purchase from. These items would range from 5 - 10.00 US

5. any other ideas that you search for at these type of markets. What items would that be and how much would you be willing to pay on average for that item?

I really do appreciate any input you can provide! I need to get this finalized within the next two weeks to have inventory ordered and shipped to me in time for the first market of the season.

Thanks!!!

I used to do the same as you, and even had the same ideas. Those small neat and inexpensive items kept the people at my booth. I used to get alot of neat things from the smc company. They have a web site smc.com, i was able to but 3 and $4 items and sell them for 9 or 10.00. try them. youll really like them.

If you'll bear me out, I'll give you a killer idea.

People that go to swap meets and flea markets spend quite a bit of time there on average and often would like to pick up a snack if the price was right. Have you seen what some of those concessions charge?

I'm a distributor for Jerky Direct which is a popular healthy snack, but usually sells for $6 a 1/4 pound bag and up, but as a distributor I buy it for less than $4. My idea is to sell it for $4 just to attract people to your booth and put a label on each bag directing them to your website so they can reorder. If enough sign up as distributors and succeed, you can make more than you do all day at the swap meet.

Sound interesting?

Drop me a note.

It's a great idea! The only problem is that, in order to sell any type of food item, you have to sign up for the markets that I go to as a food vendor. Each market only allows so many food vendors per year and there is usually a waiting list to get in as a food vendor. I know one of my best markets has a three year waiting list to get in as a food vendor, could actually be longer, but I have a friend who has been on the list for three years and there have not been any openings. Plus, then you have to meet the state FDA criteria for food, even to sell unopen cans of pop or bottles of water.

I'm sorry, cause it's a good idea, but I just can't afford to do those things right now.

Thanks for your suggestion though and I will keep it in mind for the future!
