The increasing numbers of autistic children

It had come to my attention that there is a growing concern of the number of autistic children being born. What is going on here? Is it the water, pollution, contraceptives, what? are there any statistics out there? I met a lady once, who said at one time that she was autistic. I thought she had said artistic, and so I said, me too! the blank look on her face said it all. "no autistic! not artistic!" I have also heard that these people have an innate beauty to be able to communicate without speaking.

Innate beauty to communicate without speaking? Hardly. They have a terrible disease that PREVENTS them from communicating, either verbally, with body language, or with facial expressions. Its a spectrum disorder, which means that there are varying degrees with each person, but the main symptom is the inability or unwillingness to communicate with other people. You can't be autistic "at one time", you either are or aren't, you just might have caught up kind of in your development.

hmmmmm. well, this woman was kinda strange. She stared all the time, with really big eyes, and was very slow to respond. I haven't known any cases besides hers. What I was referring to, was a girl I had seen on TV who was responding towards her animals, and her parents thought she communicated with them, since she spent so much time with them. I guess I should have typed that one out.

I do not think that "slow" is an appropriate word for autistic, which is something completely different. the woman I talked to years ago actually seemed quite highly intelligent, and yes, she caught up in her development. there is a definite difference in facial structure for someone who is "slow" ie, wider and round eyes, round head, than someone who is autistic.
