Need help for lower back pain

I have had really bad lower back pain lately. It started about 4 months ago. The pain is so bad that I only sleep for about an hour at a time and then the pain wakes me up. The doctor told me that they can't see any reason why it should be hurting like this and just prescribed strong painkillers. Is there any suggestion on what I can do to help alleviate the pain and hopefully not have to take as many painkillers all the time?

While low back pain is rarely life threatening, it is still important to have chronic or recurring back pain assessed by a healthcare professional. Potentially serious causes include spinal tumor, infection or fracture, nerve damage, osteoporosis, arthritis, or pain caused by conditions found in internal organs such as the kidneys.

Due to a car accident and spinal arthritis, I had extraordinary pain in my neck and back - especially the lower back. I won't go into how many discs were torn and bulging, but there were some things I did that helped. I saw so many doctors and surgeons, yet none helped me as much as a chiropractor recommended by a friend of my father's. My dad has no tolerance for doctors, let alone "quacks", but he went when his back was bad. I went after he convinced me to. Having been to a chiropractor before, I thought they were, well, quacks. I was so wrong! Maybe some are, but not the one I found. I came in with a cane, and after two treatments was walking without pain. In addition, I woke up one morning and was astonished at how easily I sat up and got out of bed! I've been on narcotics and I've been on OTC medicines. I strongly recommend you keep searching until you find something that helps. It is never good to be on narcotics long term. And I'm not speaking of getting addicted. It is just not healthy long term. I'm sure I'm not telling you anything new. Try not to lift anything over 5 pounds, and look up back exercises that strengthen the muscles in your back. My doctor gave me exercises, and so did my chiropractor. They were simple and worked your abs at the same time. Just a plus. : )

I also think that you need a second opinion. I find it strange that he would tell you there's nothing wrong and then prescribe strong pain killers. You need x-rays and possibly an MRI. You didn't say if those were ordered by your doctor. I went to a chiropractor and it didn't work. He was a heck of a nice guy, but he just kept me coming back and took my money. I don't think I'll ever go to another chiropractor. I tried physical therapy and they gave me exercises to do. The problem is that I had already been exercising plenty. The massages, stem therapy and ice packs helped some. The day before yesterday I had my first epidural and I'm feeling pretty darn good today. Good luck. I know that it's horrible to have back pain and even worse not knowing what is causing it.

I have been undergoing backpains for the past 12 years or so. for that long period of time, i learned some preventions by myself how to prevent the recurrence of the pains. Avoid using more than 1 pillow, if u can you can, better not use pillow. The head should be the same level with your back. Always be conscious with your posture, straight body when both sitting and standing. Consult a physical therapist as you might be having a myofascial syndrome, which means that the muscles at your back has hardened. And above all, avoid getting stressed as it is a great factor of back pains. Stay relaxed.
