If you have visitors staying with you do you give them the keys to your house?  email this discussion to a friend?

I'm talking more about acquaintances and friends than family.

I would definitely give my family the keys. However, my sister asked if her nephew could stay with us for a couple of days while he is in town. While he seems a nice enough young man I am reluctant to give him the keys to my house.

i would even be careful with my family to be honest, ive known a few of my cousins to steal before in the future, there not like that now tho, but i still wouldn't trust them especially if i was out and they were alone in my house, i know saying this is bad but it's true, i like to have alot of trust in people and them cousins don't have alot of trust, and i certainly wouldn't trust anybody else with my keys, im a bit freaked out that my landlord has keys to my house too! :O)

Fair enough, when I saw my family I mean my parents and sisters, all of whom are honest. I don't often see my cousins all of whom live over 1000km's away, but with the exception of one, I wouldn't like to have them staying with me, not because they aren't honest but because I don't like them.

I don't need to. I already have security and house-making staff to allow or deny entry to anyone while I'm away. For family and longtime friends I would give them the keys to my house. But if one of my relatives I know is a wild one. They'll just have to settle by being guarded by my home staff.

I would not do that. You do not know him that well. It may mean you have to go a little more out of the way to get schedules in sync, but I would not give someone I do not know very well, the key to my home. Of course, I would not let someone that i did not know very well stay in my home if I could not be there. But that is just me.

That's the way I feel. If they don't have the keys they can only be in the house when I am here.

This was a favour. He usually lives about 1500km away but had to come here for a college interview, He didn't know anyone here and being a student doesn't have much money, so it was no big hassle to have him here for a couple of days.

Usually the people that stays with me, are friends and or family, people I trust, so yes, I do give them a set of keys so they can come and go at whatever time they feel like. But if it is someone that I might have problems thinking that they might lose the key, then I try to be home and agree on a time that they can come in. Usually I give them the excuse that I don't have an extra key.

The only people I give a key to my house to, are my mom and my best friend. I trust both of them to come into my home when my husband and I are not here. I know they won't steal anything, or bring other people over without my permission. As far as everyone else, I will not give a key to them because I don't know what they would do if they came into my house when I'm not here. I could come home to an empty house with all my stuff gone, or come home to a house full of strangers. You never know.

That's a tough question. If you don't want to it's kind of hard to address the situation and he might not be on the same schedule as you and have to come and go.
You can get a keyless entry pad for your garage door and put it on the frame. That way he can come in and out and after he's gone, you can change the code. I think ours cost $40 but maybe there are some cheaper. You just program them to match the code in your garage door opener. Universal ones are available for almost all makes of doors.
