Is it safe to buy musical instruments via the net?  

You do run a risk, but don't auction sites have the location of the item and in many cases you can pick it up? If you have that sort of situation then you can test the instrument when you collect it.

you have to realize that buying something cheap won't get you a great sounding instrument (unless it is a 2nd hand bargain).
There are many cheap and cheerful instruments on the net (Ebay), but if you buy a brand name instrument, and have tried it before in a shop, it is safe to buy online.

Well on all online shops I buy sensitive (such as computer components) things from I make sure that there is information on how they pack it.

It depends - as said before by other people, if you're looking for a 'quality' instrument, then it's much more risky. However, if you're happy with a rougher older instrument because you just want to do it in liesure time, or you want something to start on with the intent to upgrade ... then I think you can do it, you just have to be really careful.

If you're using something like ebay, check the feedback scores, and look at the items that still have links - make sure that the good feedback they're getting includes feedback for instruments, rather than just other items (because you want to make sure instruments are something they do well). And then make sure to ask questions of the seller before you buy, because then you'll have more ideas on whether that instrument is really for you.

It really depends on which online site you shop from.

I would suggest browsing around as there are places which are good for some people and for others they let the customer down badly. I've only bought basic things online these are from high street shops which have a online site.

Try sticking with these as they won't rip you off or get away it. if you shop at a site which is safe then thats good but be careful!

Lastly it's safe is your careful =)
Carless people get ripped off or fooled. I think we've all been there but be aware of these.

I bought my acoustic guitar online & it wasn't exactly cheap. It arrived in perfect condition, nicely set up & plays lovely.

What they sell online are the same as you'd buy in a shop so long as it's from a reputable dealer. Also it always pays to buy renowned brands of instrument maker. Cheaper less known brands tend to be of a less quality & are often more difficult to play.
