Using your cellphone while driving

My cousin got in a car accident a while back while she was on the phone with my mom trying to get directions to our house. My mom heard her scream, and then didn't hear anything afterwards. My mom quickly drove to the site where my cousin was, and my cousin was all shook up, but thankfully everyone was ok. In the following article it states: At any given moment, more than 10 million U.S. drivers are talking on handheld cell phones, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Why is this a problem? Cell phones (also called wireless phones) are a known distraction, and the NHTSA has determined that driver inattention is a primary or contributing factor in as many as 25 percent of all police-reported traffic accidents. This doesn't include the thousands of accidents that aren't reported to the authorities. This has created an obvious concern about cell phone safety. Dozens of countries have banned the use of handheld phones while driving. In the U.S., New York, New Jersey, Washington, D.C. and many municipalities have fully outlawed in-vehicle handheld phone use. Dozens of states have banned cell phone use by minors and bus drivers. Here is the link if anyone would like to read the rest: http://www.edmunds.com/ownership/safety/articles/43812/article.html Do you use your cell phone while driving? And do you think it poses a risk to yourself and other drivers when you do use your cell phone? And do you think it's fair that it's been banned in some cities and countries?

No I dont use one while driving. I have been involved in a couple of near misses. I think the law should come down hard on those people who use them while driving. I heard that New York is trying to make it a law that people cannot use them while crossing the street.

I can understand why as well also. A lot of people just seem to think it doesn't really affect them, but it does. I even found out it's not the actual holding of the phone, but the actual talking that makes it hard for people to concentrate.

I hate when people use their cellphone when they drive. Just yesterday someone went through a stop sign and I almost hit them in my car. It's scary. They arent' paying attention even if they think they are. Some people are better at it than others, but how do we figure out the ones who can talk while driving with the ones who can't. I think it shoudl be illegal. My husband pulls over to the side of the road allways when his phone rings. He never drives while talking.

Yeah, I think that's a good example. I mean my cousin obviously thought she could two things at once, but it turned out she couldn't. And we're just thankful that everyone was ok. I think it's already a hard task to be aware of all your surroundings, but talking on the phone while you're driving makes it even harder to concentrate.

Cell phone use while driving is very distracting to a driver. I mean I can spot someone on the phone 4 cars back, just by watching their driving. I do think its fair to ban them while driving and it's been that way in my town for 2 years now. Drivers need to focus on driving the darn car and can pull over to talk. IMO anyway.

I believe that it is best to not use your cell phone, when you are on the road, because it unsafe for everyone involved. In NY, they are very strict about this issue, and a lot of my friends, who are New Yorkers, will not talk to me when they are driving, which is a very good thing, because it shows that many people are actually following the law. I do not drive very often, and even if I did, I would not be able to concentrate, if I was talking on the phone. I believe that it cars are weapons, and should be handled with the utmost care. Hopefully, I never get myself in such a negligent situation, and hopefully others do not also.

I have a hands free ear piece that I use when driving. Even so I will not answer my phone unless I am somewhere I can pull over while I talk. Why, because I work in a hospital ER and I see far to many accident victims that were involved in accidents where cell phone usage was a contributing factor. Plus the state in which I live has a law against using cell phones while driving.
