Did you ever wonder HOW we survived OUR childhood?  email this discussion to a friend?

With all the rules, regulations and saftey issues today I often wonder how we all made it to this age! LOL I mean, I don't know about you guys but standing in the backseat and watching the view right behind dad's head was top on my places to be when driving.... not tucked into a car seat until I was 800 pounds or whatever age! And biking? I do seem to recall being on my bike pretty much 24/7 with NO helmet, flying like the wind down a huge hill. Sure I had crashes, wasn't that part of growing up? I never once lost a friend to brain mush! Perhaps a few feet of skin throughout the years were peeled off but otherwise, we were none for the worse! Bike helmets, hockey helmets, skating helmets, knee pads, leg pads, elbow pads, mouth guards, car seats, and the list goes on! Okay, maybe hockey helmets were a good thing eventually in the NHL but otherwise I can't see a whole lot of issue at hand with safety as kids. Are we raising little whimps that cry at a skinned knee?

Does it amaze you how now the world is "so much safer"? When in reality, I never recall truly having these UNsafe ways be a real issue and loss of life or limb! What about you?

I think we were among the lucky ones to never get seriously injured in a car accident or bike accident or what have you. I believe these safety issues were brought about due to repeated incidents of children being seriously injured from falling off a bicycle with no helmet on, etc. These laws are set in place for our safety and while I agree as I child I did all this stuff and did not suffer from it, I'm the first one to tell the kids (ages 8 and 7) to get their carseat when we're going out. I'm all in favour of doing everything I can to protect them and keep them safe from harm.

myLot reputation of 89/100. hockeygal4ever (5360)   ranked 398 out of 26,920 in people  6 years ago

Oh, as a parent I've been right there with the helmets and gear too. But I just wonder if it's not a matter of 'brain washing' us to believe it's an issue. Think about your child hood... do you know even ONE person that died on their bike from not wearing a helmet? Or even in a car crash for that matter. I'm defintely not saying go without... I understand the need for them or the reasoning behind them from what they've told us.. but I wonder how we ever survived if it was truly such an issue. Wouldn't we have had more dead or injured friends? Just sort of odd to me and doesn't all snap together.

myLot reputation of 93/100. charlene2350 (4850)  6 years ago

I used to sit on my dad's lap while he was driving... Gosh, if he had had an accident I wouldn't even be here now.... I would have been crushed. Remember when cars didn't even have seat belts? When seat belts first came out I was thinking I would be safer if I was thrown from the car. I was so afraid of having an accident and burning up or drowning before I could get unbuckled. Time and education sure does change ideas.

I know what you mean hockeygal, have you ever got that email going around about how we are so lucky we survived. It makes me laugh everytime because it's so true. We shared straws with our friends, we would leave to play in the morning and not come back until the street lights came on at night (without a phone or pager) O I don't remember them all but it's a great read.

I also make sure now that my son is wearing his safety equipment that is when I can actually convince him to go outside and play - lol. He would much rather stay in the house with me.

I've gotten that same email, and yes it does make me chuckle too. I'm not certain what the statistics were between now and then, but I still feel better knowing my kid wears a helmet, and is not riding around in the back o my Dad's old station wagon unbuckled ... lol! Come to think of it, how the heck did we survive?????

myLot reputation of 89/100. hockeygal4ever (5360)   ranked 398 out of 26,920 in people  5 years ago

Yeah... sure makes us wonder if we're just superkids or really safe? LOL

myLot reputation of 98/100. emeraldisle (8959)  5 years ago

I love that email and it's so true. We survived just fine and for the most part enjoyed our childhood. I think no a days we over protect the kids too much. They need to play and now and then get bumps and bruises. It's part of life and learning. You have to wonder how much fun the kids are having when they are restrained so much by gear or parents watching everything.

omg i do this all the time. I had lead toy soldiers, i had a bike that i could ride without a helmet, i had toy cars that i used to put in my mouth and chew the paint off, it tasted good. I used to play cricket without a box on too. Lol i also used to take a tent down in to wood land where i was born and wouls spend long summer days and nights camping and fishing. No problem, but i know for sure my children have a different childhood, i just wonder how much we have lost?

I know our world has changed, but I wonder if it has changed as immensely as we think or if we just hear about it more now because of technology.

myLot reputation of 94/100. ESKARENA1 (12122)   ranked 401 out of 26,920 in people  5 years ago

i think our fears have incresed as a result of our increase in knowledge. Also, infant mortality amongst the indiginous population has fallen, could this be as a result of increasing knowledge of danger?
thank you for best response

By all rights none of us should have lived past 12 years old. Between everything we did, everything we were exposed to and the chances we took we shouldn't be alive today. At least by what they are saying now a days for kids to have to do to be safe. Personally I think we are protecting them too much at times. We do learn some things when we aren't being over cautious. Sometimes I feel sorry for what kids aren't allowed to do now. There are some things that were so much fun when it wasn't as safe as it is now. Like the wind whipping through your hair as you raced down on hill on a bike, skateboard, rollerskates or sled. Thats a feeling you just won't get with a helmet on. There are many other experiences they won't get to have. Some times it's good to know that they are protected but other times you long for how it was when you were a kid.

myLot reputation of 89/100. hockeygal4ever (5360)   ranked 398 out of 26,920 in people  5 years ago

LOL.. if I had a buck for every time I cracked my head from a bike crash I'd be rich... wait.. maybe THAT's why I'm so whacked? LOL
Seriously though, what's the fun of barreling down a huge hill at what feels like hundreds of miles per hour if you can't feel the breeze whipping past you?

What happened to going in, getting a smiley face drawn on with that red iodine stuff that burned like heck and running back out to finish playing?

Sometimes you just want to look at the kids and go.. "awww toughen up!" LOL

Ah, the childhood days were the best days of my life. I am getting nostalgic feelings of my childhood says. Those were the days.

We were so careless and so proud of ourselves. I thought that I am invisible and my mother is the most intelligent of all beings and I am the center of the universe and when I do not look at things, they cease to exist!! I know how silly I was when I was a kid. I even thought the sun and the moon follows me wherever I go.

And such crazy ideas we had. I live near a river and my parents would always tell me not to swim in the river. Ofcouse I did. And such fun it was. It is a medium current river but still for a child it is too much if we go too far . I would write and write but I don't think it would really help the discussion if I do.

I think we survived because there is always someone looking after us. It cannot always chance that when I was about to drown, I was suddenly sweep by the currents and I found a footing!

myLot reputation of 89/100. hockeygal4ever (5360)   ranked 398 out of 26,920 in people  5 years ago

So true... our world was so carefree. Now we send them out with all these rules and fears of what's around them. I'm not so sure we've made progress in many ways.

myLot reputation of 89/100. hockeygal4ever (5360)   ranked 398 out of 26,920 in people  5 years ago

So true. I remember a woman telling my twins one time "we don't say shut up". I walked over to her and said "so when you want someone to shut up do you politely go over and say "please refrain from speaking?" LOL Shut up isn't a horrible thing... F'ing shut up.. now we're talking bad mouth! Sheesh!

And remember when as kids it was settled between kids. Nobody ran home to mommy and daddy and told. Now they immediately run home and get the parents involved, who call the cops, who make an ordeal out of "my kid got pushed off his bike". It's like a freaking legal case! So if you get pushed off your bike, get up and push back. Or SHUT UP (sorry, had to say it) and run off crying. Don't bring a parent back to fight a battle.

Sad part is... now the kids are thinking that the best way to solve everything is litigation and those that don't have that train of thought think a gun shuts them up quick. Kind of sad indeed.

Hope I do not sound stupid in saying this...but I think that it is just the governments way to have a hold on us and for the manufacturers to make a profit. Okay, so the safety board came up with the fact that if you wear a seat belt you are more likely to survive the crash. But dont you think it still should be my choice whether I wear one or not...its not in my state it is the law and I could get ticketed for not wearing one....is it the safety board trying to save my life or is it the goverment (city/state) just looking to get some extra money for the city. I have those red light cameras in my town, the mayor states that it is to make the intersections more safe. but when they first came up with the idea it was to make money for the city. We survived because our parents took care of us and like you said made us tougher kids....

How right you are, I never wore a bicycle helmet or any other protective gear. I never wore a seat belt, however which ever sibling that was under 2 my mom would always put them in a car seat, don't know why she didn't make us wear seat belts. I don't remember any kids growing up that were killed in a car accident, or severly injured from riding a bicycle. We also were told to always ride against the traffic so that we could see what was happening in front of us, now kids are suppose to ride with the traffic. I don't agree with that.

Now my car won't start unless all are buckled in. No riding of bicycles without helmets, skate boarding must where helmet and wrist guards. My children have had their share of skinned knees and elbows from not wearing the pads, but I think that skinned up knees and elbows are a part of growing up.

As for playing outside till dark in the vacant field by my house, my kids won't and never will be allowed to do that. Times change some for the good and some not. Good luck here at mylot!

The world we live in today is just such a different place. We knew every family that lived on our street, and counted all of them as friends. These days, I have to tell my daughter, that it's not her I don't trust, it's those people out there who would do her harm, and I need to know where she is at all times. My mom let me play outside for hours, and roam up and down the street, visiting friends. I also walked a mile one way to school every day, from quite a young age, and never felt I was in danger. My sister and I used to sleep in the backseat on long car trips, with no seat belts (of course), and we'd even lay on the floor of the car, and sleep as well. Back then the cars were more sturdily built, and didn't crumble as easily if an accident did happen. We grew our own food too, and didn't worry about picking peas, berries, etc. right off of the vines and bushes, and eating them on the spot. My childhood was a happy time for me, and things are so much more sophisticated today, but not necessarily better. We've just gotten used to all of the technology, rules etc.

Your right, it was a different world back then. I wish the kids today could experience what we had. And what about the thing we didn't have - like a computer. Imagine that, flipping pages through a book rather than a mouse under your hand, Hahaha

We thought MP3 were letters of the alphabet and number system, nothing more!

And going outside to play football, baseball and soccer, not doing it from a couch and a hand pad!

Yep I totally agree with you...

I learned to drive on my dad's lap lol....We had a big ol 73 Chrysler and we'd pile up in the back seat with the dogs and no one was wearing seatbelts.

Not only we didn't have any protective gear when riding our bikes,we were building launch ramps lolllll

As a kid I stuck my share of forks and spoons in electrical outlets too lol,no protective lids there

When did safety become such a big market anyway???
