Fantasy or Reality? | | Is it the plot? The characters? Protagonist? Antagonist? What is it that creates something so spectacular to make people want to sit there? To have them feel that watching this movie is twice as pleasurable as getting up and doing something?
Does it have to do with not wanting to get out? Do you feel there is more pain in getting out and exercising or meeting new people, is it a getaway from the negative feelings in life?
Is it even the movie that captures some people or is it the fantasy of getting away from your own life and feel as if you are part of the characters. Part of their lives.
In Fight Club they refrain from even having a television, they don't miss it. If your television, your computer, your technological priorities were destroyed what would you do? Would you find a way to complete your addictions to technology somewhere else, or would you change for the better?
I often wonder if I didn't have a television, booze, a computer, and other things that strap you to the house, or in a fantasy land that is anything but real, what would I do? I would like to think that I would change and get myself out more, but then you have the fear and anxiety of doing something new. What's out there? Where do I begin? Who will venture with me?
I think the biggest scare of all is thinking that you will be venturing on to new priorities yourself as opposed to having someone there for support. I also think that if you can somehow push through that and go on with it, you feel change for the better and be a more strong and independent person. Isn't that what life is surrounded by? Being individual, independent, and on your own? Isn't that growing up? Being able to support yourself without the help of anyone else.
So in that aspect aren't we a world of technologically dependent people looking for our next emotional sensation in the world of fantasy?
Do you feel like you live in a more real state, or a more virtual state?
This is my first discussion topic, hello to everyone that reads it:).

| Squirrely (25) | 3 years ago | That's the perfect way to put it, "it feels like something is missing"! when the net is down, I start to go a little nuts. It's a worse addiction then most other things out there, psychologically.
Sometimes I try to push myself by leaping off of it and going out in the world to see what I can do, most of the time I do, sadly, end up back on the internet, but in a world of no electronics I would feel.......... Unconnected to the world.

freak369 (3484) | 3 years ago | Some people say that 'we' (anyone under 40) are addicted to electronics. I don't look at it like that; it's all we've known LOL. Take this as an example; when I was growing up everything was vinyl; there were no cassettes or CD's ... then cassettes became popular and now CD's and DVD's. Things are always changing and upgrading, that doesn't always mean that they are improving, but everything around up is constantly changing.
Movies like Fight Club serve a dual purpose; they entertain but for those willing to pick it apart and really examine it, there are hundreds of small things within the plot that will have your mind racing.

We don't go running naked in the streets because we know that it is wrong. But this limits out freedom of thinking, and doing what we want. The need of electronics for example is just a small part of it. The TV, the PC, and the internet makes us stay in our house and be happy about it. For those who sit all day in front of their computer, I can say "Go Out And Play!" If you get bored just find a friend, it might help.

I often find myself thinking what would I do if... well if I didn't have my cellphone, my computer, and all the other stuff I seem to be addicted to. Sice I have a pc and the internet, i really didn't care too much for TV anymore. I watch a movie or so once a week, the ones that seem interesting and worth a look. Fight Club is definitely on my favourite list of films. Watched it so many times I can now rememeber most of the lines just before the character speaks it:)).

It mirrored Palahniuk's writing VERY well...one of the best book-to-screen adaptations I've ever seen, actually.
For the guys in the storyline, I think it was them wanting to escape reality more than anything. The men have anything from schizophrenia to multiple-personality disorder, to cancer to just a bad case of acne. I guess they're all sick of living in their reality of pain and suffering, so they move on to an alternate world where they can control the pain, and they can control the suffering.
I can understand why they do it, though. I think everyone - though it could be just me - has the need to beat the crap out of someone every once in a while. Why not do it with other people who are just as pissed off as you? Then you don't end up taking it out on an innocent.
I don't know if I'm even answering your question, lol. But yeah...I don't know. This movie is just like Requiem for a Dream, 12 Monkeys, the Kill Bill films...I think people have some desire to beat people up and sword fight and whatnot. I know everytime I see Pirates of the Caribbean, I wish I was a pirate. Maybe that's just weird, but yeah. I dunno. That's my 2 cents, lol. Good first topic, definitely!
